Heartland War On Christmas

The title of this article is the putative War On Christmas, but its substance is information on the increasingly active atheists, agnostics and free thinkers in the American heartland. It draws an interesting parallel between the militancy of regional religious groups and the response of non-believers in their midst but doesn't' quite take that to the national level.

Instead the author asserts that Americans are dropping out of religion, not becoming militant against it. He cites recent stats indicating that "most American nonbelievers are not even atheists: while a fast-growing one-fifth of American adults, including one-third of adults under 30, now say they belong to no religious denomination, full-fledged atheists and agnostics make up just over a quarter of that number." He concludes that the increasing numbers of secular youth don't care much about atheism.

There are some interesting parallels and differences between the Pennsylvania examples included and the situation of atheists and free thinkers in Tucson. Read the article.
