Fall Foliage at Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve

(Fall color in New Hampshire's White Mountains)

Legend has it that the Preserve has some good color come mid-November - let's see if we can find some!

Owned by the Nature Conservancy, the Preserve is 60 miles southeast of Tucson. Take I-10 east to Highway 83 exit south. At Sonoita, turn west on Highway 82. In Patagonia, turn west on 4th Avenue. Turn south on Pennsylvania, cross the creek, and go about one mile to the entrance

Since the park officially opens at 7:30 a.m. let's meet shortly before then at the park entrance (7:15 or so)

There is a $6.00 fee per person charged by the Conservancy for admission.

If people want to carpool that would be great - please use the discussion boards to coordinate.

I will ask everyone to sign a liability waiver before the trip and will email those people that do not have one signed on file with me already.

Hi Fred, Nice to meet you too. I did get a few owl shots that are keepers but I wish I had taken a longer lens. I was thinking landscape in my planning.

  • Fred Weymouth

Anyone get any good owl shots? I will post a few later - tough to get a clean image with all of the trees and branches in the way.

  • Campbell Lloyd-Wallace

    Enjoyable

Nice to meet you Campbell. Any good shots of the owl?

Beautiful walk, the owl alone made the trip worthwhile. Thanks again, Fred!

      how was the hike?

      November 8

  • Glenn Summers

Belay my earlier comment--I found (and signed onto) the waitlist.

    November 6

  • Lisa Sternberg

I need to carpool or follow someone. I am not comfortable going to place like that, given the hour, by myself. I have never been there before.

    November 6

  • Glenn Summers

I can't seem to rsvp for this. Is it booked up?

    November 6

  • Lisa Sternberg

Is anyone carpooling? Its far from where I live

    November 2

  • Kristi

I read this wrong and thought we'd be leaving Tucson @ 7:15. Whoops. Too early for me - relinquishing my spot to the waiting list :)

    November 2

  • Linda Mann

Someone else can have my spot, given my sight problems in low light, I don't think I can drive from NW Tucson to Patagonia before dawn, I would be a danger to myself and others.

    November 2

  • Dolly L

Cheryl, does that mean you're joining Larry's group?

    October 27

  • Cheryl Heath

Hi all, I have revised my travels to Patagonia with Larry's group on the 8th so there is now an opening with Fred on the 17th

    October 27

  • Lisa Sternberg

I am confused. Is there another group going on the 8th of Nov?
    I can attend that day

    October 26

    • Dolly L

Yes, Lisa. Larry White agreed to take a group on a separate day, because several of us didn't want to wait on Fred's wait list. We would love to have you join us on the 8th: 7:15 am, same address.

      October 26

  • Larry White

I am working with Dolly to take her and her friends out on 8 Nov. I was there two weeks ago and took lots of pictures. I talked to the caretaker and he said that the trees do not turn red but only yellow. If anyone is not able to make the trip Fred is taking, you can join ours. Please let Dolly know. You need to bring your tripod and if possible learn how to do HDR. The bright and dark spaces within the trees are extreme and can be managed best by HDR pictures. Mine turn out great. Karen is right, in that I did not see lots of birds probably because there was no water in the creek.

Fred, I will be glad to offer my services as a mentor if needed. If you would like I could take one group and you could take the other. We could go at the same time just two groups. Your call. I am joining you for the Sept 27 photo review.

    September 20

    • Fred Weymouth

Thanks for the offer Larry. I'd like to keep the group size as is though. The Mission was the exception in terms of group size - I generally like to keep them under 10 people for a number of reasons. However, if you are interested, you could become a trip leader and lead your own events in the future? Let me know.

      September 26

    • Larry White

      I understand.

      September 26

  • Larry White

Fred, sorry that was the 12 oct photo review.

    September 20

  • Gerry Couture

Why is attendance limited to 10. Is it because people will be using tripods? I do not use a tripod.

    September 19

    • Fred Weymouth

Gerry, it is not a tripod issue. I keep the groups small because it is easier to manage and more enjoyable for me as the one leading the event.

      September 20

    • Dolly L

Aren't there a few mentor-type photographers that could help you? We had more than 10 at the Mission and everyone had a great time.
