THE SAPPHIRES, at the Varsity

Hi everyone! This Tuesday let's watch THE SAPPHIRES, the new film (based on a true story) about a 1960s Australian Aboriginal female singing quartet who overcome obstacles to become stars and perform for American combat troops in Vietnam. This movie is running an amazing 93% on, who say "While it's plenty predictable and sentimental, The Sapphires also has an irresistible feel-good vibe, winning music and charming performances to spare." The New York Times describes it as "a solid, stirring song sung with more sincerity than polish ... determined to muscle its way into your heart, which would have to be a lump of gristle to resist it". And Rolling Stone writes, "You could call it an Aussie Dreamgirls. I'd call it a blast of joy and music that struts right into your heart." In short, this movie might be a bit light and fluffy, but its good music and happy emotions should provide a nice contrast to last week's serious fare. So, please come see it with us!

SHOWTIME: 7:25 pm on Tuesday April 9 at the Varsity Cinema. (movie length = 1h39m)

MEETING TIME: 6:55-7:05pm

MEETING LOCATION: At the Varsity Cinema, just past the ticket-takers, by the customer service desk. Look for tall hairy Jeff with a yellow MEETUP sign.

CAUTION: Another meetup group is apparently seeing this same showing, so send them good wishes but don't let them reel you in!

TICKETS: This movie costs just $7.99 (or $7.19 with a Scene card); you may wish to purchase your ticket in advance at

AFTER THE MOVIE: Let's all discuss the movie for a few minutes as a group right in the cinema lobby. Then, interested persons are invited for drinks and socialising, probably at the Foxes Den bar at 1075 Bay Street.

I hope to see you there!

Best wishes, Jeff

Enjoyable movie! An eye opener about the treatment of aboriginal Australians right into the 70's. Thanks for organizing this one Jeff.

Plot holes of course, but delightful performances that make you my care about that.

Sorry Jeff. I can't make it tonight. Canada vs USA, women's hockey. Gold Medal game.
