For this Tuesday, let's see THE WIND RISES. You may have heard this film referred to by its original Japanese title "Kaze tachinu". This film is in Japanese with English subtitles.
IMDB writes: "A look at the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II."
The movie is running 88% on rottentomatoes.com with audience reaction at 87% (as of Mar.08), who write: "The Wind Rises is a fittingly bittersweet swan song for director Hayao Miyazaki."
This is Hayao Miyazaki latest directorial & writing effort, and much to my disappointment, supposedly his last film. Through his production studio "Studio Ghibli", Miyazaki has brought us an array of anime films that have won or been nominated for an arsenal of awards over the years. Some even believe that Miyazaki has no equal. IMDB says: "Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's greatest animation directors. The entertaining plots, compelling characters, and breathtaking animation in his films have earned him international renown from critics as well as public recognition within Japan." I have personally been enjoying Miyazaki's films since the 90s and I will greatly miss the quality of his films if this is truly his last.
According to the listings, the movie should be Japanese with subtitles. However, there is also a version that is dubbed in English. If they decide to run that version for us instead, the movie is voiced by stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Martin Short, and Stanley Tucci, but considering them the stars of this film is somewhat deceptive. The true "stars" in any Miyazaki Anime film are the animation, the writing, and Miyazaki's direction.
As always, please consider buying your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. I've already purchased mine.
It may not be practical or even possible for us to save seats. If you have a preferred choice for seats, please arrive early as seating is not reserved. You are not required to sit with others from the group as part of attending meetups that I host, but I do ask that you check in with me before the movie starts and/or meet with us after for the short discussion of the movie.

AFTER THE MOVIE: Let's all discuss the movie for a few minutes as a group in the hallway directly in front of the theatre room that the movie will play in.
AFTER THE DISCUSSION aka "DRINKS AND SOCIALISING": Options for drinks and socialising will be discussed among those who are present and are interested. I am open to reasonable suggestions, but choice of venue will likely be made democratically by "majority vote". Participation in Drinks and Socialising is not required to attend or RSVP Yes to this meetup. If noone's really interested, we simply won't do it.
RSVPs/LAST MINUTE DECISIONS: For any of my movie meetups, if you are on the waiting list or make a last minute decision, please feel free to check in with me and join. RSVP time and quantity limits are used by me for situations where a hard limit is required, not for the actual "watching of the movie" or discussion. However, if we are saving seats or you wish to join us for drinks and socialising, I cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate drop-ins.
I hope to see you there!
