Keystone Ancient Forest Hike

This opportunity to hike the Ancient Forest is Saturday August 11, 2012. We will hike both trails within the Keystone Ancient Forest near Keystone Lake west of Sand Springs. You will be surrounded by a classic crosstimbers forest with 500 year old cedars and 300 year old Post Oak trees. You will experience a grand view of the Arkansas River Basin where famed American author Washington Irving passed by and camped in 1832. Irving is known for "the Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". The trails are inside a 1,360 nature preserve listed by The Nature Conservency as one of the last great places on Earth. The trails (a 3 mile and a 0.6 mile) are rated easy to moderate. Many would consider them easy with graveled trails. No pets are allowed. Call or email organizer Glen Brewington of Backwoods for information. Meet at Backwoods to caravan/carpool ready to leave at 8:00am Saturday morning August 11, 2012. Bring water, insect repellant and sunscreen and please dress appropriately for anticipated weather. Please join us! The facility only allows entrance inside the forest once a month and the early time was selected to allow us to walk in cooler morning temperatures and it is not an intent to compete with other meetup hikes. You can get more information about the Forest by searching "keystone ancient forest sand springs Oklahoma".

Thanks to everyone for coming to the Keystone Ancient Forest hike Saturday morning. With the huge turnout I was not able to talk to everyone individually to welcome you upon arrival or say thanks at departure. I hope you enjoyed the opportunity to see these not so big but old trees while they are here before fires or..... I also appreciate the forest volunteers for guiding and explaining.

Bob was great, we had a nice turnout-I didn't know who was with TOAM and who wasn't so those of you I didn't get to say "Hi" too, maybe next time! :) Was a great way to start the day and weather superb. Thank you for sharing the hikes with us Glen!

It was much prettier than I thought it would be after months of no rain and of course, we picked the perfect day to go weather wise. Everyone was very nice and friendly too.

    Another carpool location on west side of river. At the exit of Hwy 97 & 412/64 there is a Walmart and a QT. Those who want, can meet in the Walmart parking lot( closest to QT) at 8:15 and leaving promptly at 8:25. Look for a newer white/black Subaru Outback and a small white Chevy Prism. Park and go from there. Look forward to meeting you :}

Just to let everyone know that our meeting location in Tulsa is at Backwoods which is at 51st and Sheridan in the Farm Shopping Center. Some mapping services put it somewhere else... Sometimes way further east . I had a note from some people needing clarification about this and thought it might be helpful to all. The address is correct in the meetup announcement heading... 6508 east 51st street.

Thank you very much! Yes, it looks like a fantastic amount of interest. I called the office for the Forest today. They said that current or past fires will not cause them to not open. They will be open. Fires are not in the immediate area. They are aware that we have a big group coming and are planning on it. So we are still on to go!

I talked with Keystone FD yesterday and I know they had mentioned the fire had started back up and they have lost multiple homes, so wasn't quite sure. :) I won't be able to go to this meetup since I'm working overtime on Saturday but hope you all enjoy it and hope to meet u all soon!

    August 6, 2012

  • Angela

Are you still going to be able to do the hike with all of the fires burning over in those areas?

    August 6, 2012

    • Glen B.

I am assuming we will. The fires I know of are not in the same area where we will be at. I understand most are being controlled now if my information is correct ( according to KRMG). But I will be checking with them to verify. A friend of mine is a volunteer for the forest. I emailed him yesterday with the number if people expected, so he knows we are coming. He has not said anything about not opening. I am glad you asked and thought about it! Glen Brewington

Thank you for setting up this opportunity.
I have read historical diaries that mention the Cross Timbers. Ever notice that the wagon train routes all divert far north or south of Oklahoma? This was a barrier! In the diaries I read, the prevailing low brush brambles nature of this scrub woods that stretched across our state were so thick that a lone explorer had to dismount, lead his animal and try to hack his way through for days on end. I suspect the centuries may have completely changed what we will now see!

the suggested search for map or directions only shows you how to get to either the Sand Springs city hall or to their Ledger newspaper. Who has either a link or can give driving directions to the hike from Tulsa please?

    August 3, 2012

    • Glen B.

You should be able to google " keystone ancient forest preserve Oklahoma" and get a Sand Springs Oklahoma website for the city. And scroll down for their directions. Basically from Tulsa you go west on hwy 412/64 toward Sand Springs and travel further past Sand Springs to 209th West Avenue (also called Prue Road). Turn right (north) on 209th West Avenue and travel about 2 miles to the entrance to the Ancient Forest. There is a tall orange and white cell phone tower (shaped much wider at the bottom than the top)directly across from the entrance . This tower is the second cell phone tower you easily see from the road. Go past the fiest tall tower to the second one described above. The entrance has a large sandstone sign with a massive black gate. My cell is[masked] if you or anyone needs to call me. Glad you are going! Glen Brewington

Is it okay to bring my children to this hike? They are 6 and 10.

    August 3, 2012

    • Glen B.

Absolutely! You can have young ones with you. The trails are child friendly and should be educational too. Please bring them along! On our last hike to the "Forest" we had several kids possibly as young as 4 or 5 maybe. The Ancient Forest walk is August 11th. Glad you are coming. Glen Brewington

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
