Both of us had baby turtles when we were hardly more than babies ourselves. The turtles didn't survive long, because we knew so little about their proper care. We're older now, and hope to get wiser. We'll get turtles when we learn more about them.
We used to keep baby turtles in the tiny plastic bowls (with a tiny plastic palm tree) that came with the turtles many years ago. This time we'll buy an aquarium large enough to provide a decent home for whatever species of turtle we decide to get.
When we were children we had either red-eared sliders or common map turtles, which were the kind sold in Woolworth's. When we learn at this club's meetings which species would thrive best in a very large aquarium, we'll start keeping turtles again.
We have none of these items to share now, but will as we come closer to purchasing our turtles. We expect to attend meetings whenever we're not obligated to be elsewhere. We've already signed up for two of the next three club meetings. See you there.
"We learned about the turtle club through the other club we joined recently, the Geneva Area Pond Club. Having two such clubs so close to our new home is a bonus the estate agents neglected to mention. We're really glad we live here now."
We were surprised to see turtles and tortoises galore at each club meeting, brought for a visit by their proud owners. We also saw the turtles or tortoises living in the homes and gardens of club members where the meetings are held. Seeing the different species up close is the best way to learn about them.
