    Hi Everyone
The 9th Sandstone Ice Festival is next weekend If you are going to the festival and are planning to ice climb you need to have you own boots that will accept a crampon. Boots can be rented at U of M - (612)[masked]http://www.recwell.umn.edu/outdoor/rentals.php or you can reserve gear and just pick it up at the festival, both Positive Ed and the U of M Duluth will be on site with their rental gear. Reserve the gear in advance at Positive Education - call[masked]http://www.outdooredventures.org/

Vertical Endeavors also has ice climbing gear.

Non-climber activities include Winter Camping Clinics, a nature walk organized by the Audubon Center of the North, Banning State Park has miles and miles of cross country ski trails, and there is planty of hiking in the area. Big Spring Falls is a hidden gem (just south of Robinson Park) and Hell's Gate (up river from the park)

      Also,
The Ice Festival is taking over the Sandstone Seniors Center Saturday night. We'll have a guest speaker, door prizes and a gear swap. I hope to see some adventure seekers at the event.

It looks like the beginner's clinic is already full for Saturday. I sent email to see if there's still any opening but only options are Sundays at this point.

The U of M Duluth brought all their rental gear last year to have on-site for demoing and rentals. It is first come first serve though, so I reserved boots and crampons from the U of M Twin Cities just to be sure. You'll definitely want your own boots and crampons but can usually share tools between 2-3 people. If you want to climb all day, definitely make arrangements to rent your own boots and crampons. If you just want to try it once, you can get by just demoing some gear. VE and the U of M rent stuff but make a reservation in advance. Make sure you rent a helmet if you're renting gear!

Here's the link for info on U of M rentals: http://www.recwell.umn.edu/coa/rentals.php

Whether or not you do a clinic, there are also plenty of opportunities to climb more if you have rented gear. There are usually 20ish routes at Sandstone, and at IceFest most will probably already have a rope on them. People will usually leave the rope up and just rotate to another one rather than pull it down and reset it every time. It's usually ok to jump on someone else's rope if they aren't using it at the moment, but always ask, and be VERY conscious of where your sharp crampons are going when you are walking around ropes. Stepping on one could ruin a $200 piece of equipment! It's also common courtesy to yield to people who are lead climbing, which will be rare, but you might see.

As for accommodations, whenever I go to Sandstone I just camp :) I'm sure there are nearby options for hotels and the lodge thing in the post info too. The city of Sandstone specifically allows climbers to camp in the park anytime.

      Any questions?

I've never done this before. It says limited demo gears? Are there rental gears or do I need to bring my own gears? Do we get to climb or we giving demo on how to climb?

Will be a first for me too, so excited to find out more than what's available online. Hope to get some more insight from Matt who's been there before. Are you planning to carpool and share lodging with me?

I would if I can get more info on this event. If I'm just standing around watching demo and there's no gear for me to climb then I'll pass.

I'll be there camping all weekend and climbing. Probably doing the intermediate/advanced clinic at some point. Ice Fest is a great event. It's really rare to have such a fantastic ice park so close.
