Come on out to Freethinking Camping in beautiful Cannon Falls, MN, just a short drive about 30 miles South East of St. Paul!

Camping will take place at a secluded private residence. There are private areas to set up camp, or set up closer to civilization if you'd like. The residence is only 100 yards away from the local Cannon Valley Bike Trail, and near the swimming and water-fun friendly Cannon River for the rustics, with a swimming pool available as well for those who are more urban. This is a family-friendly event with lots for the kiddies to do as well!

The event is limited to around 50, so RSVP early to get your spot!

This year we will be doing our 2nd Annual free-will donation to Camp Quest. Do not feel like you have to donate, but there will be a collection taken for those of us who want to give back to freethinking kid campers in Minnesota! Last year we raised $350.00 together- let's try to beat that this year!

Saturday Afternoon/Evening:

Set up to start on Saturday at 1pm, dinner around 5pm. Detailed list of food/drink info for supper, snacks & breakfast is listed below at the end of the post.

Sunday Morning: the canoe trip is scheduled for Sunday morning until early afternoon.  Please state when you RSVP if you'd like to also attend the canoe trip so that we can make a reservation for you. (You will have to pay for canoe rental fee.) We will verify exact times of canoe trip when the date gets closer.

Not a camper? Come out for just the afternoon/evening on Saturday or the morning/afternoon on Sunday!

Activities Available: Some activities that will be included in the weekend on Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning: bike riding/walking/roller-blading on the bike trail (some bikes available if needed); horses- driving the cart or riding/swimming in the river; swimming (river and pool); and an awesome campfire! There may also be a mini golf course available this year, who knows?  :)

Doggilies: Feel free to bring furry friends, but please be responsible for your animal!

Canoe/Kayak/Bike Rental: There are also businesses just up and down the river (about 6 miles away) that rent canoes, kayaks, tubes, and bikes. (They also provide shuttle service back to your car for these activities.) Please see the following websites for more information:

Should be no problem... I've got 5 canoes and 4 kayaks and 2 rafts... and they know we may jiggle the numbers a bit (10AM is well before any rush, so they are flexible at that time).

Well, now that we actually performed tent-roundup, it turns out that I have EXTRA tent space. Didn't realize I had 4 functional tents in my garage on top of the one that needs to go back to Tent Heaven (REI). Let me know if you need one. I have a small two-person backpacking tent (better for one person unless you're an experienced backpacker or into small quarters) and an old two-person old-school square tent. Oh, and on another note, I'm bringing my tiny rodent-dog Daisy. She's 9 lbs and likes all other animals, large and small, although she's shy around people and will glue herself to me.

    • Ken K.

It would be nice if you could bring one extra. Sometime people don't plan on staying the night but want to.

Cool, JuliAnne! :) We're bringing Sen sen, she missed last years camp out, but she's back in full force. :)

So it is looking like I may not have a sitter for my youngest son tomorrow , are you a safe distance from the river ? He is 2 1/2 will there be other toddlers around maybe ?

    August 2, 2013

    • Ken K.

My two daughters will be here... and we all like kids :) ... I'm sure we can make it work. We also have a one-year old in the house, and Sarah Ann has a 3yr old... it'll be fun. We are about 1/3 mile from the river.

We would love to come and meet new people that think like me. We would like to go canoeing and bike riding.

Can't wait to see you there!

      July 29, 2013

    • Ken K.

Looking forward to meeting you, Bruce. Canoes are reserved. We have bikes available here, and you're welcome to come a little early if you would like to get a longer ride in. You can pick up trail passes at the grocery store in town, or you can ride east or west (I like east) to a station and get a pass. You can also try the gravel road for free (east... it is hardly traveled by cars, no one lives east for more than a mile).

      August 2, 2013

  • Ken K.

You're welcome to come a few hours early if you want more time to bike. You can pick up a day pass for the trail (only for 18 and over) at the grocery store downtown, or also get a pass after riding to Cannon Falls Trail Head or Welch Station. You can also ride the gravel road for free (there are few cars or houses on it if you go east). If anyone wants more time with the horses (buggy, ride, river), please let me know - you could come a couple hours early for that, too. Else I take the horses to the river around 4PM (before dinner) and will take the buggy out around 7 or 8PM.

    July 31, 2013

    • Sarah A.

I think a combination of the first and the last would be really nice. Maybe do some single rides to start off then head down to the river....again, thank you so much! My kids are so excited!!! See you tomorrow.

      August 2, 2013

    • Ken K.

Sounds perfect! Mayson is hobbling today - I am afraid he may be out. But the calmer, older horses will be raring to go... chomping at the bit... you know.

I'd like to go canoeing on Sunday, and Joanne and Dave would like to go canoeing also. It appears I will need a canoe partner.

    July 31, 2013

    • Ken K.

JuliAnne, I have one large tube I bet we could pull along with a raft (then people could take turns in it). Tubes might be too slow for the whole trip... and they don't rent tubes on that section (tubes rent down river from our leg). You can make up your mind at the rental - they should be flexible Sunday morning (10AM) because they will have enough equipment at that time... and I probably reserved a couple more than we need. Finally, we often take turns as some people want to try out the different kayaks. I think the raft works out for a group that wants to stick together and maybe not as "adventurous" ...and might benefit from 2 people who won't mind paddling... but if you take turns in a tube or kayak or canoe, that can make the raft more flexible. The river conditions also affect decisions... the river looks to be well-behaved, making canoes and kayaks a little less "adventurous". I hope that helps.

Not yet sure if it's just me or me + fam. Forgot about my fatal malfunction on one of my backpacking tents. I'll check the tent situation and see how many I have space for. If I bring the fam we may be short of tent space for one of us.

    July 28, 2013

    • Ken K.

We will have an extra family tent available... and other "structures" we can put together.
