3rd Annual Freethinking Camping

  • Aug 6, 2011 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come on out to Freethinking Camping in beautiful Cannon Falls, MN, just a short drive about 30 miles South East of St. Paul! Camping will take place at a secluded private residence. There are private areas to set up camp, or set up closer to civilization if you'd like. The residence is only 100 yards away from the local Cannon Valley Bike Trail, and near the swimming and water-fun friendly Cannon River for the rustics, with a swimming pool available as well for those who are more urban.

The official overnight will be as follows:

Set up to start on Saturday at 1pm, dinner around 5pm. We will provide meat and veggie hot dogs/brats and buns to roast for the main meal, and ingredients to make S'mores later in the evening! Please consider bringing a dish or munchies to share and anything else you'd like to drink. (Alcohol is okay as long as you are responsible and do not plan on driving.) You are also welcome to bring your own food for dinner, and don't forget something for breakfast the next day!

Sunday Morning- the canoe trip is scheduled for Sunday morning until early afternoon.  Please state when you RSVP if you'd like to also attend the canoe trip so that we can make a reservation for you. (You will have to pay for canoe rental fee.)  We will verify exact times of canoe trip when the date gets closer.

Not a camper? Come out for just the afternoon/evening on Saturday or the morning/afternoon on Sunday!

Some activities that will be included in the weekend on Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning: bike riding/walking/roller blading on the bike trail (some bikes available if needed); horses; swimming; geocaching; possibly a freethinking movie and/or dance music in a great barn; and an awesome campfire! Private campers can have their own campfires as well, but it will be fun to sit around the main fire as a group and chat through the night. Feel free to bring furry friends, again, please be responsible for your animal! (Do we see a theme here?) :)

There are also businesses just up and down the river (about 6 miles away) that rent canoes, kayaks, tubes, and bikes. (They also provide shuttle service back to your car for these activities.) Please see their websites if this is something you'd like to do:

Stay on Sunset Trl for 2.5 miles, crossing the bike trail near the river, and 1/2 mile further, turn onto long driveway with large gray mailbox with 28500 on it.

If you have any questions or want more details, just shoot us an email here on Meet Up! Hope to see you there!

Thank you to the Kressins, Crystal and Victor for such a great event! The goats were adorable, the horses sweet and it was fun meeting so many new people!

It was so great this year, best year yet hands down!!! :) Thanks to all who came out, and a big thank you to the Kressins, you are all amazing!

Thanks - Ive never launched on the cannon and it sounds like it's not navigable to motorboats. Thanks. We will leave it home this time.

    August 6, 2011

  • Ken K.

I have never seen traditional motor boats on the river - not sure if they are allowed. There are sections where the water is moving rapidly with rocks not too far below the surface.

    August 5, 2011

  • morgan c.

The cannon river is a very rock and shallow rapids strewn river. Canoes, kayaks and innertubes are much more prefered vessels.

    August 5, 2011

  • Crystal D.

Looks like there are a couple of boat launches just to the east of Cannon Falls, but the ones near town and west look like carry ins. I'm not super familiar with the area, Ken would probably know more! http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/watertrails/awesome_cannon.html

    August 5, 2011

  • Bruce

We do have a 15' motor boat. Seats 6 - if there is any kind of access nearby. Should we consider bringing it?

    August 5, 2011

  • Ken K.

For those planning on the river... I have reserved 3 canoes, 4 kayaks, and one raft for Sunday at 10AM. The heavy rains today were not up-river, so we should be OK :) We can finalize plans Saturday night, but the cost will be about $20 per person - unless you have your own boat, of course!

    August 1, 2011

  • Rohit

So I shall have two extra spots in my car..message me if you need a ride :) First two get the spot if I get more than two messages!

    July 31, 2011

  • Crystal D.

OMFSM, this is going to be the BEST camping year yet, I can tell! :) lol. Sorry that I can't give rides, Gary is amazing in so many ways, but not necessarily in seating capacity... :)

    July 31, 2011

  • Dawn M.

jc? heh heh. Where do you live, jc? Maybe I can pick you up. But be forewarned, I have no therapist. You'll just have to deal with my rage.

If you have lawn chairs, please bring a couple along. Thanks!

    July 30, 2011

  • Ken K.

We're showing a 20 minute video montage in the barn at dusk, so if you want to suggest something funny/freethinker related (...will be rated R). I'll try to work in a piece of it (cannot promise all videos will get in). If interested, post or send me the youtube link with a comment defining the timespan.

Ken, Crystal & Todd - thanks so much for the ride offers, or helping Kevin and I to figure out how to get there. Unfortunately we decided to miss out this year as Kevin is not feeling up to it. The more chemo treatments, the more its affecting him. Good news is he has 2 left to go. We'll try for next year. Hope you all have fun! And again, thanks. :)

    July 24, 2011

  • Rachel B.

Todd, we can be your transportation. Let us know where to pick you up.

    July 23, 2011

  • Dawn M.

I'm going on the river trip which doesn't end until after noon, so I won't be leaving until mid to late afternoon, otherwise I'd take you, Todd. Is anyone else leaving earlier on Sunday?

    July 20, 2011

  • Caroline

    They are really adorable!!!

    July 20, 2011

  • Ken K.

Goat picture added - two of the seven...

    July 20, 2011

  • Todd

I need to head back around noon on Sunday. I live off of the I-94 and Dale exit. Can I get a ride with anyone as well?

    July 20, 2011

  • Caroline

Oh well, at least the goats will like me. I'm the Goat Whisperer!

    July 19, 2011

  • Dawn M.

So, no hugging and cuddling Caroline at the end of the day. Forewarned is forearmed.:-D

    July 19, 2011

  • Caroline

No goat eating, only hugging and cuddling! Just warning you, I'll reek of goat by the end of the day! :)

    July 19, 2011

  • Crystal D.

Lol, there are SO many animals out there, and they're all friendly things. :) It's fun! But I don't want to eat any of their goats, so Caroline will have to control herself... ;)

    July 19, 2011

  • Dawn M.

So, if Caroline hugs some goats to pieces, can they be put on the menu? It would be a shame to waste them. How about a nice curry? :-D

    1 · July 19, 2011

  • Caroline

If there's a goat around, I have to hug it to pieces! I probably should join a 12 step program...

    1 · July 19, 2011

  • Rohit

Yay awesome, you guys are great!
I don't mind getting tight and cozy!
Also, Caroline, fetish about goats? I really love your phrasing :D

    1 · July 19, 2011

  • Crystal D.

Oh, awesome Dawn!!! So that means that with yours and Kens, and Josh and our extra tent, we have a total of 6 extra tents!!! So no one be shy about coming without a tent, you will have a place to stay!!! :)

    July 18, 2011

  • Dawn M.

Also, I can give rides to those in need. I live in Bloomington.

    July 18, 2011

  • Dawn M.

Tentless take note: I will bring my tents (one 10X10 with a divider, one two person and one single. So, room for me and about 6 or 8 other people total, depending on how much you like each other), my sleeping pads (4, but I get dibs on one of the big ones!), and my screen room (if there is room for more than one).

    1 · July 18, 2011

  • Caroline

Can not wait! I have a total fetish about goat!! Thank you so much for letting us invade your home!

    July 18, 2011

  • Ken K.

Did I mention the goats are really cute? Fresh goat milk, anyone? Yogurt? Morning milking? ...Goat meat in not on the menu :) I plan to have the doctor's buggy rolling this year for anyone interested in driving or riding. If you want more time with the horses, let me know.

    1 · July 18, 2011

  • Ken K.

We should have a tent too, and some extra sleeping bags and pads, so just ask when you arrive if you need anything.

Excellent! I may have to make use of one of those :).

    July 17, 2011

  • Crystal D.

Yes, we should have at least 3 extra tents I am guessing, plus a screened in tent kind of thing as well that people can lay down sleeping bags in or whatever. Also, the tents we do have extra for sure sleep more than one person- I know ours could quite comfortably fit two strangers with plenty of room to not feel awkward. :)

    July 17, 2011

  • Rohit

Crystal any chance there are spare tents? I don't have one (and I see from the RSVP list that Jack doesn't either).

I'd be happy to provide a ride, maybe we should have a list of people with cars, and those without, to manage carpooling. Btw I'm really excited for this! :)

    July 17, 2011

  • Ken K.

Carol, would you plan on over night? Would you be canoeing or willing to wait for the canoers to return (around noon on Sunday)? This info would help with car-pooling down.

Wouldn't you know, we're already registered to camp somewhere else that weekend.
