4th Annual Freethinking Camping

  • Aug 4, 2012 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come on out to Freethinking Camping in beautiful Cannon Falls, MN, just a short drive about 30 miles South East of St. Paul!

Camping will take place at a secluded private residence. There are private areas to set up camp, or set up closer to civilization if you'd like. The residence is only 100 yards away from the local Cannon Valley Bike Trail, and near the swimming and water-fun friendly Cannon River for the rustics, with a swimming pool available as well for those who are more urban. This is a family-friendly event with lots for the kiddies to do as well!

The event is limited to around 50, so RSVP early to get your spot!

This year we are attempting to collect a free-will donation to Camp Quest. Do not feel like you have to donate, but there will be a collection taken for those of us who want to give back to freethinking kid campers in Minnesota!

Saturday Afternoon/Evening:

Set up to start on Saturday at 1pm, dinner around 5pm.Detailed list of food/drink info for supper, snacks & breakfast is listed below at the end of the post.

Sunday Morning: the canoe trip is scheduled for Sunday morning until early afternoon.  Please state when you RSVP if you'd like to also attend the canoe trip so that we can make a reservation for you. (You will have to pay for canoe rental fee.) We will verify exact times of canoe trip when the date gets closer.

Not a camper? Come out for just the afternoon/evening on Saturday or the morning/afternoon on Sunday!

Activities Available: Some activities that will be included in the weekend on Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning: bike riding/walking/roller blading on the bike trail (some bikes available if needed); horses- driving the cart or riding/swimming in the river; swimming (river and pool); possibly a freethinking movie and/or dance music in a great barn; and an awesome campfire! There may also be a mini golf course available this year, who knows?  :)

Doggilies: Feel free to bring furry friends, but please be responsible for your animal!

Canoe/Kayak/Bike Rental: There are also businesses just up and down the river (about 6 miles away) that rent canoes, kayaks, tubes, and bikes. (They also provide shuttle service back to your car for these activities.) Please see the following websites for more information:

FYI all, we raised $350.00 to donate to Camp Quest! I will be writing up the letter and sending it on soon to explain to them what it's about! :)

Really great weekend, as always!!! :) It's getting to be like a family reunion out there.

The kids rode horses for the first time, our family went rafting (another 1st!), and we had a blast swimming in the pool and the river! It was great to get to know old friends better and to make new ones. Already looking forward to next year!

    Thank you again!

Weeee! I hope the stormy patches on Saturday skirt us! We'll be fine, but I'll do my anti-rain dance anyway.

Ha ha, good call, Jack. :) Looking forward to seeing you!!

The barn is large and dry... bring a drink and a board game :) I am hoping it will be all past by early afternoon - the weather looks great after that!

My tent sleeps 4 + my dog, Hercules. His name is the only big thing about him; he's a pug. I'll bring extra sleeping pads (one is very cushy, the other two, not so much, but fine for kids). Anyone is welcome, but you'll need a sleeping bag (or blankets) and a pillow.

      That's awesome, thanks Dawn!!! :)

I can't remember if I said I needed canoes or not. We would like to canoe; although, my 8 year old daughter will probably not tolerate paddling for very long, so if another adult wants to help me that'd be great. I see that you're collecting a good will donation for CQ, but is there no cost? I'll bring some garden goodies and dip and a dessert.

Hi Rhonda- there is no cost to camp, it has always been a free event! We are collecting free will donations to Camp Quest this year as something new, as some who come out feel the need to 'give' for their experience. We figure us adult campers can work together to fund some of the kiddie campers... :)

Rhonda, we have plenty of time to switch around and try different craft. I usually jump out and swim for a while :) Your children may want to try a kayak by themselves - just ask.

Hi Ken, will there be port-o-pottys by chance?

    July 29, 2012

    • Crystal D.

Melissa, where did you go last year? :) lol

      August 2, 2012

    • Caroline

I wondered that myself, but thought it might be better not to know! ;)

      August 2, 2012

  • Crystal D.

Hey all! There will be some people, including Vic and myself, bringing extra tents, so don't let that hold you back. To anyone who is a first time meet-upper, this is a great opportunity. There are plenty of chances to mingle, but also enough space to do your own thing if it is overwhelming. It is a really wonderful environment out there!

Morgan, you're welcome to bring any pancake mixes. We will have a flat skillet for making pancakes on. Especially appreciated would be a few minutes of your cooking expertise!

    July 29, 2012

  • Ken K.

Melissa, as Morgan said, the house will be open with 2 full bathrooms available, and yes... if anyone wants a "more natural" experience, you're welcome to construct (as necessary) anything you'd like in the woods :)

  • morgan c.

Hey Ken! How about I bring some Crusteze pancake mix for breakfast? I had thought the campout was today and was not really in the mood, so it's great that it's next weekend.LOL I'll have my kayak with me for the river.

    July 29, 2012

  • morgan c.

Hi Melissa! Ken has two restrooms in his house available to guests. If you are into animals you could try the basement of the barn but I like to use the woods occasionaly. :)

    July 29, 2012

  • Ken K.

I've made reservations for 2 canoes, 5 kayaks, and 1 raft... and some people are bringing their own. The river should be at a good depth on Sunday morning. We may be able to add to the reservations as late as the Saturday before.

THE ROAD IS NOT CLOSED! Hwy 19 has fresh asphalt, and has been officially closed during resurfacing, but it IS OPEN to local traffic, so you should have no problem proceeding around any barricades just east of Cannon Falls.

    2 · July 28, 2012

  • Ken K.

Remember to bring your own drinks if you would like anything special. Also, there aren't many veggies or fruits or desserts provided - so please pick up a little something to share to round out the meals if you can. FYI :) You'll pass by Econo Foods in downtown Cannon Falls. Thanks!

    2 · July 24, 2012

  • Ken K.

The Cannon Valley just had 2 inches of rain which should put the river at a good height for kayaking, canoeing, and rafting Sunday morning... if you're considering that.
