Paddle the Back WATERS OF THE MISSISSIPPI

I have done this trip several times and loved it every trip. Lots of wildlife, beautiful scenery. the Backwaters will have several channels, back waters bays, and islands. There will be a need to stay together. I would hate to loose someone. I will have maps to handout. A compass is a good idea to bring. 10:45 will be a leave time so come early. There is plenty of parking. I will paddle unless there is a thunder storm.  Then I will wait until the storm passes. Expect a 4-5 hr. paddle.

There will likely be boat, cruiser, and barge traffic. I'm sure we can avoid them. But could cause a wake.

Bring: Lunch, water, sun gear, rain gear, a gallon zip bag for the map. And a compass is a good idea.

Every one must be responsible to know where they are

I will have a sign in and check out sheet so I can tell if some one didn't return. Last week there were 49 paddlers and I couldn't keep track of every one.

    Hey Judy,
Should have come with us, We had catfish pie, watercress salad with Arrow root all sweetened with lowland maple syrup and added aroma form the down stream pigs eye plant.

Hey, it was great and we didn't even have to eat any cattail roots or fronds to survive!

Running just a bit behind-- boat loading took longer and will be 20 minutes or so late. If you must you can go on, but on my way now!

Are we doing any shore stops along the way or is this a straight paddle? I'm deciding if I should bring my dog.

Stephanie, I live in Burnsville near the 35 split. I you like, you could meet me at my home and go with me from there. Let me know.

OK Stephanie, I will be there with the kayak /skirt/paddle for you. This is a nice place to paddle!

Can you tell me about the wakes from barges and such. How big are they? Is a spray skirt needed as I don't have one for this kayak yet? Any idea water temps of the Mississippi, have never paddled it but been doing inland lakes and rivers for years.

Judy, We avoid the barges when ever possible. They are slow and yo can see them from a long way off. The wake can be quite large. It shouldn't be a problem. I have done this trip several times and never seen someone go over in a wake. We still need to keep the eyes open. If a barge comes by you may want to turn into the wake. If I bringing a spray skirt it will be in storage. I agree with Kevin. Not a big deal.

Anyone interested in carpooling? I am near the Walker Art Center. I am happy to drive but don't have a rack on my car.

Hi there Paul. This sounds great! I'm just curious about how long you plan to be paddling. I'd like to check with a place in Red Wing to see if they can rent me a kayak and shuttle it. (I am an experienced paddler, but don't own my own boat or have a car rack.)

I have a tandem 17 foot canoe I can bring if you want to double up or bring a friend. I can carry two on my car so no worries. Let me know if needed
