Outdoor Climbing and Hiking @ Taylors Falls

Here is another opportunity for rock climbing at Taylors Falls.

If the weather is cold or if the rock is wet, we can just hike around the area and explore the different climbing spots on the MN and WI sides.

Please make sure to pick up your free MN climbing permit at Self Pay Station. You can also pick up a permit at the Park Ranger's office, which is located at 307 Milltown Road, Taylor Falls, MN.

The rangers do walk around and ask to see permits sometimes.

The drive time to Taylors Falls is around one hour from the Twin Cities.

Also if you plan to drive, you will need a Minnesota State Parks Permit to park your car. You can also buy a day park pass.

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/permit.html

The Park Ranger's office opens at 9:00am.

Please bring water/water bottles. A drinking fountain is available in the area.

Restrooms are also available in visitor center.

Please look for us in the parking lot. A picture of the meeting location is provided below. Please meet between 8:00am and 8:15am.

I will also come back to the meeting location between 11:00am and 11:15am to help everyone else to find us.

Otherwise, just walk down the paved trail to where the steamboats dock and then keep going over some rocks and you should see the rock climbing area and us.

(FYI: I think that the picture only loads on computers and does not show up on smartphones):

Sorry guys, rapid riders kidnapped me again. Please do this again... I really wanted to come and learn about Taylor's falls. Have fun and see you next time.

Anyone have an extra seat in their car?

    May 25, 2013

Thank you, Pedro. I found a ride already though. See you at the Falls!

Hey first time doing an event with this group. Relatively new climber, I don't have a rope or anchor setup. I'd be more than happy to just belay and do some hiking and bouldering though. Looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying a nice day! Also, carpooling from St. Paul, leaving around 6:30-7:00 am if anyone is interested in joining. [masked]

So as a first time climber outside, what should I bring?

    May 23, 2013

    • Harley

Also what's the rule on chalk?

      May 23, 2013

    • Paweł W.

Climbers bring and use chalk at Taylors Falls.

Pawel, could I get your cell for Sunday? Or someone's?

    May 24, 2013

    • Paweł W.

I just sent you an message/email with it.

Hey! Anyone want to carpool from St. Paul? I can drive or I can hop in with others. Thanks!

    May 23, 2013

    • Harley

If I don't plan to camp, I'll probably be up for carpooling from St Paul

      May 24, 2013

    • Fred K.

I'm outa Stillwater at 7 am but not sure when I will return. If you want to stay later than I do you could probably itch a ride home with some one else.

Hey Fred, sorry I was referring to the 27th since it's Memorial Day. I thought maybe people would stay in TF

      Like camping? :D

      May 24, 2013

Hi everyone! I'm really excited to get outside and climb this weekend with y'all. I definitely need to carpool on the way there, possibly on the way back (although I may be meeting up with family at the end of the day.) Happy to pay for gas and coffee :). I'm in Minnetonka.

    May 23, 2013

    • Josh F.

Hey! Text me at[masked] if you still are interested in carpooling.

  • Mark P.

Hey, I would like to do some climbing. It has been a while since I climbed outside. I worked at various Outward Bound/NOLS programs from 1975-1985. I'm 60 in good shape, have a rope, will be driving from Eden Prairie if anyone needs a ride.

    May 24, 2013

  • Harley

This will be my first time climbing outside. This will be interesting :)

Would this trip be mostly for experienced climbers?

    May 23, 2013

    • Paweł W.

It is for all levels. Beginners to advanced level climbers are welcome.

I would like to get an idea how many people have rope and gear? I have my own rope and gear. It sounds like Emily has rope and gear. Anyone else?

    May 19, 2013

    • Willard

I have a rope and some gear. I need to learn how to set anchors. First time.

I'll be bringing rope and gear as well. Know anchor setting basics, but if someone would like to take Willard and I under their wing, I'd love to learn anything and everything about anchor setting.

      1 · May 21, 2013

  • Dina

I have a rope. No top anchor gear though. Looking forward to it!

    May 20, 2013

  • Peter H.

Are there top rope routes or is it mostly lead climbing and bouldering? I've never done lead climbing. Does this matter?

    May 10, 2013

    • Mark J

Taylors Falls is almost all top rope routes. I've seen some routes trad lead there but it seems rare.

      May 15, 2013

    • Peter H.

Something has come up next weekend and I won't be able to go. Happy Climbing!

      May 20, 2013

  • Fred K.

I've rope and gear and can set an anchor.

    May 19, 2013

  • Emily H.

I have a rope and some other gear, but sadly I normally climb with more skilled people from school in New York and I'm still not very good at setting up a top rope. My boyfriend's flying out to visit, and I'd love to get some outdoor climbing in with him, but will there be people there who could help me with the setup? We've never climbed in Taylors Falls and we'd love to get the opportunity. :)

    1 · May 19, 2013

    • Paweł W.

Yes, we will have people who have been climbing for many years and I can help.

      May 19, 2013

  • Mark J

I'd like to come along but it doesn't seem like I'll be able to. Hopefully you all have enough ropes. Nothing worse than several people all trying to climb one route.

    May 15, 2013

  • Matt H.

    I'll be in the Needles!

    May 4, 2013

  • Alanna

I have been belay certified for 3 years now and recently became lead certified. I have not done much with the lead however. Can't wait to get outside and climb. Thanks for offering another outdoor climb.

If we get anywhere near the numbers we had last weekend we'll need to split the group between the MN and WI sides of the river to thin things out a little bit...
