NORTH SHORE

I'm not familiar with the Finland Campground and how to reserve a site there. There are two available group sites in the Tettegouche State Park for this weekend.

This weekend should make for beautiful hikes too as the fall colors come to a close for the season.

9/24/13.  Just reserved the group camp site (Basic A-GS2) at Tetegouche State Park for us.

Site costs:$107. Firewood: $30(3 bundles a night). $137/X people. Right now with 11 people, that wouild be $13 per person. Assuming that only half the people who rsvp show up, that would be about $23 per person.

I'm crossing my fingers and toes that the rain will skip us.

10/09/19: FYI-Saturday night, we'll have a potluck so bring food to share.

If you're new, look for the site with the MEETUP sign. I believe the site is a walk-in/carry-in site, but I could be wrong. I've never been to this campground before so it will be new to me too. I'll try to be there early and put up a tarp providing there's trees. If you come out to Palisade, I'll have my Meetup shirt on.

Here's my number: [masked], if you're lost and need to find us.

Out of curiosity, how long of a rope do you need to climb at the North Shore? I'll be saving up to get a rope over the winter but want to make sure I get the right length... 60m? 70m? Thanks!

    October 17, 2013

    • Jon

      Thank Kyle!

      October 17, 2013

    • Tan

Kyle is right - 60m is versatile for most North Shore routes. Other than that, it's a personal taste (durability/lightness/etc.). You might find this review on ropes useful http://outdoorgearlab...

How to find us: 3 miles north of Silver Bay, take a left follow the the orange sign to Tettegouhe state park follow the road for about 2 miles to the last parking lot on your left. Follow the trail next to the garage cans, cross the bridge, turn right to Ridgeview, group site 2.

I am looking to carpool up to the site, but I don't really know anyone going. I can drive or ride just the same, I have 2 harnesses, a rope and all the camping gear (2-3 person tent). So anyone looking to carpool let me know.

Hi all! Just letting you know that Eddie, me, and Eddie's +1 will arrive around 4:30pm on Saturday. It looks like we have all the info we need to find the group campsite, but if we can't find the site, it looks like a few people provide's cell phone numbers. Looking forward to this weekend :)

    October 10, 2013

  • Liz

Hi folks! I'm super excited to join you this weekend. Any of you familiar with the camp grounds? Is it a drive-in, or walk-in area?

    October 9, 2013

    • Rich

It's a drive in. The campground is right after the bride over river on Highway 6. Hard to see, so slow down. And the group site itself is just down what looks like an ATV trail.

      1 · October 10, 2013

  • Harley

I think my friend and I will be arriving either late on Friday or early Saturday, how will we know which campsite and is there someone we can contact incase we get lost?

    October 9, 2013

  • Kevin S.

I am a part of a student group at St. Cloud State University. There will be four of staying at Finland starting Thursday. We are looking to get a decent amount of climbing in. We will have 2 ropes, some gear for anchors, but we don't have the most experience setting up anchors without bolts. We would love to meet more people in the climbing community and learn some more about building anchors.

    October 7, 2013

    • Tab Y.

Kevin, I'll be at Palisade on Friday and most likely Saturday. Stop by. You can also text me. I don't know how well service is up there, but you can try:[masked]

We are planning on leaving around 2-3 on Friday, so we will be getting most (if not all) of our climbing in on Saturday possibly Sunday. We also have room for 2 more in the truck if anyone needs a ride. again we don't have anything to set anchors so hopefully one of you will be nice enough to lend a rope ;)

    October 7, 2013

  • Paweł W.

I'd like to carpool. I can leave Friday after 5pm or Saturday morning.

    October 6, 2013

  • Tab Y.

As of right now, I am planning to leave early, like 4/5am, and will try to get some climbing in on Friday. I will be at Palisade.

    October 3, 2013

    • Peter H.

Tab, I'm back in this thing and would love to join you and whoever else is climbing on Friday. I have to head back to St. Paul after climbing on Saturday so I want to make the most of Friday.

Also, if George can swing it he'll be coming up with me.

Ok, im in for friday, probably +2. Derek, it is a bit more complicated to bail out of a route at palisade head, you cannot walk back up there. But shovel point should be good.

    October 4, 2013

  • Derek A.

I'm pretty new to climbing, only been to VE a handful of times, no outdoor experience to speak of. Is this probably the wrong trip to start with?

    October 4, 2013

    • Tab Y.

Come along and find out for yourself. I think Shovel Point is a good start, some of the routes are short and in the 5.6 to 5.9 ranges.

Tab, do you habe a complete set of gear? I am thinking of going earlier, but i dont have all i need to set up a rope, id also like to have someone around who can check

    October 3, 2013

    • Tab Y.

I have enough gear to set up several anchors. So you should be ok getting there early.

      October 3, 2013

    Just read this:
FYI folks, Shovel Point is currently CLOSED during the week. This month and into October this will continue. They will open during the weekend on Saturday and Sunday but the trail is closed for construction Monday through Friday.

I am sadly bowing out of this adventure. Too much work piling up.

    1 · September 24, 2013

Let the work pile on, it won't go anywhere, it'll be right where you left it when you get back. :-)

Friendly reminder, pls remember to change your rsvp if you cannot make it. Thanks!

I want to reserve the group site in finland, but not sure how many people will show up--i dont want to pay for that much if no one came. So I'm going wait a little longer to make reservation.

    September 18, 2013

  • Korbin Mikado P.

i would like to try to make it out there, i have gear for a single top rope anchor plus rope. I don't drive, could i catch a ride with someone. also would i need to bring a tent or could i just set up a hammock.

    September 17, 2013

    • Tab Y.

Hey Korbin, a hammock will not do. It'll be too cold for it. I have a tent and sleeping bag you can use. I'll offer you a ride too if you want, we'll just have to share gas$.

      September 18, 2013

  • Jon

I'd be interested in trying out the north shore on this weekend...I can drive, however don't have any gear as I have done limited outdoor climbing

    September 10, 2013

    • Steve

Did you guys go last weekend? Would anyone be interested in this upcoming weekend? I'm just worried the weather will be awful by the time this meetup is scheduled to occur.

      September 17, 2013

    • Christopher S.

I've been up there in October before. It can get a bit cold at night but the days are just fine. Add an extra layer and it's not a problem. Then again it could also snow so you never know! :)

      September 18, 2013

  • Jon

I'll have room for 2more people (possibly 3 if you don't mind a bench seat) in my truck. Thinking about leaving around noon on Friday if you need a lift and that time works let me know and we will figure something out.

    September 18, 2013

  • Christopher S.

Finland campground is first come first serve. Which shouldn't be a problem in Oct. The only thing you can reserve is the group site, I'm not sure how many people you need for that. But Tettegouche runs the reservations for it if I'm not mistaken. The good thing about it is it's walking distance from a couple bars and a pizza place. There also aren't any rangers there so it's a little more relaxed than I would expect the park proper to be. Never stayed in the park though. Could be cold up there by then!!

I have gear for two TR(ropes included) and a rack.
