Free Outdoor Clinics at Taylors & Red Wing

Edit by Alli: I added a tentative date so that it showed up higher up on the "upcoming events" list on the front page. This date can easily be changed.

Summary: Free clinics on outdoor climbing at Red Wing & Taylors Falls.

Background:
I teach climbing at VE now and want to teach clinics outdoors on a variety of topics such as: setting up top ropes, transitioning to sport leading outdoors, rappelling, trad leading, etc.
What is taught is very dependent on what the students want to learn. Suggest something to me and we can probably develop a clinic around it.
I have many years experience in climbing outdoors - trad, sport, mountaineering, alpine.

Details:
This would be for FREE.
There is no connection between these clinics and VE.
Also, there are no strings attached - only ropes.
I would prefer to teach these classes during weekdays (M-F) because it is so busy at TF and RW on weekends.
Each clinic would be about 2 hours or so.
I think clinic size would be limited - 5ish?

What I’m asking of you:
If you are interested in this type of clinic and you can join us on weekdays, please drop me a line.
If you are interested but can only do this on weekends, let me know that too. I am willing to run these clinics on weekends, but my preference is on weekdays.

this sounds awesome. i am not at ALL an experienced climber though... would that be okay? i'm free tuesday morning!

There are about 6 people coming next Tues at 2pm to Taylors Falls. So in the morning would be tough for me. Why don't you fill this form out and let's see if others can come in the morning? http://tinyurl.com/mo...

Thanks Richard...great idea! Looking to meet new climbing partners and learn top-belay and trad climbing. I plan on arriving at Taylors Falls mid morning next Tuesday 27th if anyone else wants to come up early.?

This is a great idea! I filled out the spreadsheet, looking forward to it.

I've been planning on taking the top rope set up class with a friend for awhile, but just found out he can't make any of the ones offered through VE, so we'd both be in. Can do during a weekday if there's advanced notice to take off work.

Can you do the following Tues or Wed 8/27-28th?

      August 18, 2013

    • Tina

28th would probably be better for me, or the week after. My climbing partner at VE (who isn't on this site) is also interested in attending, but he needs to coordinate with his wife with kids and all that. I'm finding out a bit more from him before I put us down on the spreadsheet, but I'll be sure to use that to let you know what's easiest.

I filled out the spreadsheet -- are you doing lessons 1x/week or 3x/week? Meaning, were the options just to find out which days worked best for everyone and only ONE date would be chosen, or are there 3 lessons going per week?

Hannah, let me get this first one done and see how much interest there is in it, and then let's talk about addn ones.

    Hello Richard,
This is great! I just got back from climbing in SD and WY and always wanted to get initiated to trad climbing.
Weekdays are perfect! I will fill in the spreadsheet attached above.

Ali, I'm interested in transitioning to trad leading. Weekdays work perfectly for me. I'm open to both locations.

  • Alanna

Very interested! I can't make this Tuesday but could next Tuesday. 2pm is perfect! I would like to know how to set top rop and build on sport lead climbing. I took a class on sport lead and passed the test, but have not been able to practice since. I don't have a rope yet, but hope to purchase one this fall.

Very interested, weekday evenings would be great, with enough notice might be able to swing something closer to 1 or 2PM. Interested in anchoring, happy to learn anything.

I appreciate all of the quick responses.
I would like to schedule something next week starting at TF maybe at 2ish.
This could be a clinic on setting up top ropes. I have all the gear for doing that. I do request you at least have a harness and know how to belay. (If you don't know how to belay, I can teach you in about 30 mins, but it's easier if you already know how to do that.)

I would like you to prepare a little for the clinic by practicing some knots and reading some info. I will email you links and the info I am talking about so it should be easy to review. I think it might take you 30-60 mins to review the stuff I'll send you. (This will make it a lot more productive for you and for any others.) If you are interested, please email me back at [masked]. Or, reply to this post.

Weekdays (evenings) are fine for me with some notice. Know the basics of anchor setup, but would like to have some supervised practice. Also would like to practice trad, self-rescue, sport.

Since there are only two people who can go on 8/20, I think it's better to change the date to 1 week later so we can get at least 4-5 people to attend. So let me know if you can make Tues, Aug 27th. (BTW, this is an awkward way to get messages to each other, That's why I'd prefer email.) So far, the consensus seems to be to focus on setting up top rope anchors. Which is fun to learn and shouldn't take much time. I have a syllabus and a list of gear to bring and some resources you should review before the clinic, Email me at [masked]. I will be at VEM on Sunday 8/18 until about 1pm. I am also teaching classes at VEM this Mon and Thurs nite. So ask for me at the front desk if you want to talk to me directly. Any other comments or suggestions are welcome.

Oops, I forgot to ask, please tell me what you want to learn: anchor set ups, rappelling, etc. We won't be able to get to everything, but let's structure this around what you want to get experience in.

Let's set it up for next Tues - 8/20. The weather forecast looks slightly better. Please email me to verify you are coming. I will send you some materials via email and we can talk about what to bring and exactly where to meet.
