News and Events - 3/23/12

VE Team

Hey parents!  VE's spring teams are registering now with a deadline of Monday, 3/26.  Find details for St Paul here and for Minneapolis here.  Four kids from these programs made it to nationals held earlier this month and one of them took first place in her division!  That's first place nationally!!  Crazy.  See comp highlights here.  Get your kid in a program, there are beginner through advanced teams with VE and the coaches are great folk.  Also, if you're interested in becoming a coach, send an email to Tyler at [address removed].

The 2012 MN/WI Climbing Book is available for Pre-order

Mike Farris has been working for over a year on a new edition of our beloved MN guidebook.  It is now available for pre-order at his website:

2012 Best of the Midwest

The annual BOTM comp is coming up on April 14th.  Competitors and volunteers are wanted.  Register to climb at  To volunteer, email [address removed].  Visit here for more information.  This is the main annual fundraiser for the MCA who keeps our outdoor climbing access alive, support them!!!!!

Rock Art II Photography Exhibit

The MNCC is hosting an Art-a-Whirl exhibit for the second year in a row.  Submit your photographs for display or add it as a destination for you and your family and friends.  Find more information here.

I saw Brett McGraw last night and he's talking about Taylors Falls on the weekend of 3/31.  Watch the calendar and your email for an announcement from Brett.  Brett has trad and top rope set up experience and loves to share in climbing adventures.  Taylors Falls is a great place to get outside for your first time.  It offers many routes 5.8 and below to get comfortable with the mental aspect of climbing outside.  It is a much different experience than climbing at the gym!

I am waiting for Red Wing to dry up a little bit on the shady side and then I'll be looking to get some folks out to Red Wing for some sport climbing (and top rope for those that don't lead).  My sources tell me that it is wet, wet, wet on the shady side these days and this week's rain likely hasn't helped.  The sunny side is all 5.10+ and up, so if you are a confident leader, there is still great stuff available in Red Wing.

Jug-or-Not; VEM comp

VEM is hosting their first comp on 4/21.  Details are just rolling out.  Find registration and volunteer info here.
