Fall Climbing and Camping at Blue Mounds!

Blue Mounds is one of the four state parks in MN that offer rock climbing (Interstate, Temperance River, and Tettagouche are the others). There are a large variety of climbing routes available. All climbing skills are welcome on this trip! This trip will be a great time for everyone.

We have the sole group campsite at Blue Mounds State Park reserved from 4p Friday October 9 ? 4p Sunday October 11. The site holds up to 75 people. Parking for about 25 cars is available next to the group camp site. The group site is located near the park office. According to the very nice ranger I talked to, we will not need carts/wagons for our gear (I?ll probably bring the trusty Radio Flyer just in case). Restroom is 25? away. Showers are available in the main campground. Large fire ring with about 4 grills. About 10 picnic tables. Partially shaded. Tent pads are grass or bare ground. We cannot bring in fire wood; we need to purchase it ($4/bundle) at the park. In addition to your camping gear, you might want to bring a folding chair for the campfire. If you have a large container for water, that might also be helpful.

Climbing is 1.5 ? 2 miles away from the group site. The ranger said that people typically either walk from the campsite or park by Lower Mound Lake; about ? - ? mile away, and walk from there. Swimming is also available at Lower Mound Lake. There is a very small parking lot (just a few cars) directly adjacent to the climbing area, but it fills up very quickly.
You must have an individual climbing permit to climb. They are free and can be obtained at the park office. You need a state park permit on your car to park your car in the park. Cost is $25/annual (purchase at park or at REI) or $5/day (purchase at park). Cost for this trip is $10/person for Friday and/or Saturday night. We will have a group meal/potluck/party on Saturday night. Bring something to grill and something to share (as well as whatever you need to serve the item you?re sharing ? i.e. bowl/utensils). The $10 covers the cost of the site, which is prepaid. Any excess will be used for group camping supplies for the trip. Please consider your $10 pretty much non-refundable; i.e. the money has been fronted and paid regardless of the weather or whether you later cancel. It?s really helpful for planning purposes if you pay in advance. Thanks very much for your consideration in this regard.

Other possibilities include 13+ miles of hiking trails, a bison range, canoe rental (for Lower Mound Lake), horseshoes, and volleyball. I know Jay has a slackline. Anyone have a bocce ball set they can bring?

Please post your needs/bounty/climbing supplies/carpool interest on the site when you RSVP.
I will coordinate the camping part of this trip (Michelle W, if you?re interested, I?d welcome your help with this); those of you with more climbing experience than this newbie can coordinate the climbing part (Sean, Sydney, Clara have all offered help). Any questions/suggestions/ideas, please let me know. Thanks, and looking forward to a great time!

Mary
