Second Saturday Century Series, Ride #3: Jim's West Metro Loop

  • 7/7/13 Update:

    A few quick things. One, my knees have been bothering me lately when I ride, and I've found that if I push too hard and hit the wall, I lose all strength in them for a few days. Because of this, I'm going to treat this as a "casual ride", slow things down a bit, and take it easy on my knees (so that I can finish). Anyone who hasn't signed-up for fear that they may be too slow, please know that I don't plan on doing much more than 15-16 MPH on flat ground, so if you think you can go the distance...

    (Of course, for you faster riders that may be concerned about this, just know that I'll catch-up with you at the predetermined rest stops, and I'll take a shorter rest/break).

    Secondly, a couple people have asked if they can "bail out" early (at the 50 or 75 mile mark, for instance). My response: Absolutely! If you need (or want) to bail out early, feel free! All I ask is that you make suitable arrangements ahead of time, and inform me of your plans "day of" so I'm not looking for you at mile "x".

    (And heck, with my knees, I may have to join you!)

    Lastly, if we have to postpone the ride one week due to weather, I will NOT be able to ride on the 20th, so someone else will have to post and host a ride for that week.

    NOTE: The previously scheduled July century ride has been canceled due to my inability to find a safe and suitable route in western Wisconsin. However, since the May (western suburbs) ride was canceled, I am re-posting that route in it's place.

    My apologies to anyone who cannot do this particular route.

    This year we will be hosting Century Rides on the Second Saturday of every month from May to October. This will be an opportunity for experienced riders to get in some miles, see some scenery, or simply do that century ride they’ve always wanted to do.


    Important! These rides are intended for experienced riders only, and will NOT include SAG support (unless mentioned elsewhere). Naturally we will watch-out for one another (flat tires, etc.), but all riders will be expected to be self-sufficient (food, water, tubes/patch kit, tools, money, etc.), as well as have an adequate back-up plan in case they should need to SAG out. Although you will be able to ride your own pace, riders should understand that extended delays and/or frequent stops by one are unfair to the rest of the group, and those that cannot keep a reasonable pace, or experience problems that are beyond our ability to fix quickly, will be asked to SAG out, otherwise you could compromise the safety of all the riders.


    With regards to weather, the plan for these rides is simple: Should there be a “rain delay” on the scheduled day of the ride, the same ride will automatically be rescheduled for the following weekend (3rd Saturday). Should it rain on that weekend as well, the ride will be canceled entirely.


    Having said that, I would like to introduce the third ride of the "Second Saturday Century Series" which will be based out of Elm Creek Park, and which will cover parts of the NW and western suburbs, as well as part of the Metro area. The entire route may be seen here:

    Several of you will recognize this ride as the same one we did last fall, but this time I will have predetermined stopping points located every 20 miles or so in order to eliminate confusion.


    The ride starts at 8:00 AM, so please allow adequate time to prepare yourself and your bike. With regards to speed, the idea is to ride (and finish!) together, as a group, and not treat this like a race. I will try to keep an average (flat) pace of somewhere around 15-16 MPH (See Update above), but of course we’ll go slower uphill, and faster downhill!


    I will hand-out a detailed map of the route at the beginning of the ride that will also show the stopping points, and I will try to limit all stops to no more than 20 minutes so that we can complete the entire ride during the daylight hours. However, it would behoove you to have appropriate night-lights for your bike should the ride finish after dark. This is a serious safety issue, so please consider all environmental impacts.

    As always, please bring your safety gear (helmet, gloves, etc.), appropriate clothing, hydration, and a positive attitude!

    Mother Nature decided to wash the roads & trails overnight, and while it's raining right now (7:00), the radar and forecast look favorable. I don’t want to ride in the rain, but I’ll be at the park at 8:00, and if anyone else shows can make a go/no go decision as a group.

    YO :-) New to the group, not to cycling :-) . Can someone give me some Beta on the ride you are all doing on Saturday? Hills? Average Speeds, route (city to city?), fuel stops? Support? etc...

      Dan, "I" am going to keep the average speed down for this ride (because of my knees). "Others" who have done this ride before with me will probably ride ahead, and that's cool. My speed? I don't know...call it 16 MPH average on the flats. The route is one-half "cows & corn" (country) and one-half city trails & parks. I have prearranged stops every 20 miles or so, but if someone wants/needs to stop, we stop. Simple as that. For SAG, you're on your own (as per the ride description). Hills? Yeah, we got 'em. But there are plenty of long, straight, and flat stretches as well. It's a little of everything!

      Paul, I usually get "CamelBak Elixir" tablets (from REI, and the same thing I gave you on the last ride), but I'm out, and can't get to REI in time, so for this ride I'm trying a different brand: "Endurolytes Fizz" (from Erik's). We'll see...

      Ken, we will be stopping at regular intervals (water, snacks, bananas, etc), so other than the usual items (spare tube, money, glasses, etc), just whatever you feel you will need to go the distance. Me, I always bring Shot Bloks (energy) and "electrolyte-fizz"­ tablets (for leg cramping).
