Is anybody interested?? Im thinking of putting a ride together for a beginner hill challenge. There will be no speed average or pace on this one. It's for BEGINNERS and we will to stay together. I am awful on hills so me, the ride leader of all things, will probably wind up at the back! Remember this is a BEGINNER hill challenge!!! The ride will be on several roads which have bike lanes so you must be comfortable with that. The fun begins at t East Medicine Lake Beach. Take the trail until we get to 36th. We will go east on 36th to Douglas Drive. Go South on Douglas drive until we get Golden Valley Road, Take Golden Valley Road to Winnetka. We will travel north on Winnetka for a very, very short distance. Turn left onto Okla. Drive. We will come out Plymouth Rd, ride for about .3 miles and turn right onto a street I can't remember the name of. This is long steep hill. At the top of the hill we turn left and this is another hill. We travel along that street until we have to turn right. Travel on this street. (YAY... its flat!) Until we meet up with opening of General Mills Park Preserve. We will take the trail which has a lot of short steep hills -- but sometimes they go downhill :-). We will also go fairly slowly on this trail because there are a lot sharp turns. We will exit the park on Ensign (Guess what . . . another hill to climb!) We will turn left onto Medicine Lake Rd and take that back to the beach. Once on Medicine lake Road. . guess what . . . it is finally all downhill! I have been unable to successfully map this ride on Map My Ride or Google. I guess you will have trust me. It's about a 14-17 mile trip . . . but a hilly one. Of course, if anyone is so inclined, we could find a way to add more hills. The really truly social part of the ride will be at the end. At the beach, I'm planning to grill hamburgers/hot dogs, with beans and chips. You will be responsible for your own beverage. And if you want to bring anything else -- feel free! . But I will really need to know how many people think they want to attempt this. And the last meal is ONLY for those that finish! (More details on this later)
I have mapped a similar ride on RidewithGPS. If you want to join RidewithGPS (it's free for what I did) and let me know your name, I can friend you so you can see it. It's longer than the one above . . . around 20 miles and has many more hills. Some of them are really steep. Also, none of my ride repeats.
It is on bike trails, some streets with no bike lanes but these streets are not that busy, and streets with bike lines so as mentioned above you must be comfortable with that.
Just so you know, if this route is done, it will be a no drop. If someone does not make it up a hill and must walk up, we all wait on the top of the hill for them to join us -- and give them a breather if they need it. So you would need to plan on extra time for this ride. There will be no average speeds or mph requirements.
