Fair warning: 6 "century" rides being planned for next season!

  • Route locations and maps "TBD"

  • With Jennifer's blessing I will be posting 6 century rides next season, one each for the months of May through October (with a possible ride in April if the weather cooperates). Currently the idea is to hold these on the second Saturday of each month, as these dates seem to have the least amount of conflicts with large, organized rides (most notably the MS150), and it will be easy to remember (I'm thinking of calling this "The Second Saturday Century Series"). These will be unsupported rides for experienced riders only, intended for riders who have always wanted to do a century (and honestly feel they can do it), but haven't had the opportunity, or for those who simply want to get some miles in.

Currently I only have two, and possibly three, routes planned, so I am open to any and all suggestions with regards to other possible routes (in other words, you can have a "say" in where these will occur!). If you would be so kind, please shoot me an email through Meetup with your Google Maps, Map My Ride, and/or other possible route ideas, but keep in mind that other than one ride (a possible "out and back" on the Lake Wobegone Trail), I am going to try to keep these rides "metro-based", as not too many people want to drive far to ride.

I will post more details and dates as soon as I have things a bit more nailed down, but for now, just know that these rides will be available, that I could use some help with route ideas, and that you've been given "fair warning" (no excuses for not being in "mid-season form" come next May)!

Have a great winter everyone, and I'll see you in the Spring!

    Jim

Hi, I was wondering if this meetup was cancelled. It appears that way on my computer. If it is not, I would definitely like to join. It sounds like a blast!!!

Michelle, I didn't post this as a "traditional" Meetup (where people get together), but rather to give riders a "heads up" that these rides would be available. As TB mentioned, the rides are posted (see the monthly calendar), and we are working on the final details of the routes right now! These rides will be fun, so I hope to see you out there! Jim

Thank you Jim. I'm really looking forward to it. This will be my first.

I'll sag one all the way with my truck. I can carry 6bikes and five people. We can drive 100 miles out and ride back in Lots of corn and cows 100 miles out. Wobegon?. if you make one the Tour de Cure Century June 1st ;) . Marilynn's already signed up

Cool idea, JR! I hadn't thought of that (drive out, ride back in). Makes for a whole new world of possibilities. I just signed-up for the Tour De Cure, but I have this nagging suspicion I have something going on that weekend that I’m not remembering.

I can help out with SAG support, so if there is a list please add me to it.

    December 18, 2012

    • Jim K.

Lisa, I have no SAG “list”, per se, but if you'd like to do this, that would be wonderful! Please keep an eye out for the “official” ride postings, and we can talk at that time, ok?

just some thoughts ... 50 / 50 sag /ride one rides 50 mi. other drive sag then switch. alternate sag , alternate ride sag every rest stop . leap frog , sag leap ahead to next stop then rides back to group and does it again and again . I can't make it any more complex. just thinkin

Uh.....what? :) Seriously though, I *think* I understand what you're getting at, Tom, but I'm not certain. Let's talk after New Years, when I plan on really buckling down on these rides.

Jim, If you would like any input on the Lake Wobegon trail let me know. I rode 70 miles on it last fall in prep for my first century.

Thanks for the great information. It confirms what I suspected. Thought this would be a nice one for early in the year; fairly flat, can head back at any time, towns every 10 miles or so and, with lack of shade, should not be ridden in the middle of summer. I'm looking forward to riding it, especially after your description.

      December 18, 2012

I agree. Early in the year would be good.

Can't wait I'll tie a string around my finger

    December 17, 2012

    • Jim K.

Maybe look at them as a nice way to increase your miles over last year, Tom!

I guess the"fair warning" is that we should train over the winter so even if we're not in "mid-season" form we're ready. Great! This gives us a goal to work towards. Thanks Jim! I've also heard some discussions about people volunteeing to provide sag support for some of these rides. I'd be willing to volunteer if my schedule allows.

    December 17, 2012

    • Jim K.

Bingo! You got it, Tamsie...."No excuses"! (And you WILL be on one of these rides, right? :) ) I've received a couple offers for SAG support, so maybe I'll see about incorporating that into these rides.

I have not done a Century yet and now I will have no excuse not to. I am really looking forward to doing my first one :)

    December 17, 2012

    • Jim K.

Cathy, barring bad weather, there should be 6 opportunities for you to get one in, so "Watch This Space"!

      December 17, 2012

I make a motion to have a Summer Solstice Saturday Century on the 22 of June.

    December 17, 2012

    • Jim K.

Beth, do you want to post/host it, or would you like me to incorporate it into this? I ask only because I'm thinking of including an automatic one-week "rain delay" in these rides (rains this week, we ride next week), and the 22nd is only two weeks after the second Saturday. Let's talk!

    December 17, 2012

Just for you, Bryan: We'll create a "Cows & Corn Ride" as I know how much you like 'em!
