It's not cycling, but this is a great event the Luminary Loppet!
This is a weekend long event, but last year we signed up for the Luminary Loppet portion and had a blast!
Weekend events: http://www.cityoflakesloppet.com/
Luminary Loppet only:http://www.cityoflakesloppet.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9:-luminary-loppet&catid=6:loppet-events&Itemid=31
Ski, snowshoe, or walk around Lake of the Isles amidst thousands of luminaries, an Ice-Cropolis, Enchanted Forest, and an ice pyramid! Bonfires, fire spinners, hot cocoa, coffee, and cookie stations. There is even an optional post-luminary loppet party with live music and dancing for an additional $10.
Participants can either pre-register (suggested ? $16 by January 14, $20 by February 2, $24 to register at event) or register on-site on Saturday. Day-of registration and pick-up will be at the top of the Mall in Uptown between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 5. Once participants have their event bib, they may start at any location around Lake of the Isles. You do need to sign up for a specific time: 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30 or 8:00 p are available. I am signed up for 7pm. Per Loppet rules, you must register and pick up your Loppet bib (which you wear) at the top of the Mall in Uptown between 2-6:30 pm on Saturday, February 6.
This Meetup is also posted on Outdoor/Snow Lovers (OSL) calendar. If you want to snowshoe/walk/ski with others from these groups, you should register for 7:00p. I am not "leading" the event - just gathering folks together for those who want to go with others :)
Since we will be joining OSL, lets meet them outside of Old Chicago by 6:45p and head out from there. If you want to have a beverage beforehand, you can meet inside at the bar ~ 6p - just be sure you are outside by 6:45p - if you want to take off with everyone else. Don't forget your bib, XC skis or snowshoes! You may walk the route, but you must stay to the side of the ski trails.
If you need to rent skis or snowshoes, you might want to check with REI, though I'm sure there are other places that also rent equipment.
People who are XC skiing will probably go much faster around the lake than those snowshoeing. Please know that you might be on your own or with just a few others when you're skiing/snowshoeing/walking - we probably won't stay as a group through the entire loppet, so please don't expect us to "lead" or keep you all together.
We can meet up at the end if you want. Sue from OSL is checking into an optional Famous Dave's excursion post-loppet for those who are interested and there is the party at the Loppet tent party.
Info on post-luminary tent party: "Warm up after the Luminary Loppet at the Post-Luminary Loppet Party ? featuring live music by Bellebottom (playing great 70s covers). Make a night of it and come tell stories, dance, and enjoy live music in the big tent in Uptown (at the top of the Mall near Hennepin Avenue). Beer, brats and barbecue for sale, with complimentary hot cocoa for the kids. The Post-Luminary Party is free for registered Luminary Loppet participants and $10 for everyone else."
