Monthly Get Togethers for the Southwest Suburbs: First Thursdays

  • June 6, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Who:  Residents of the Southwest Surburbs of Minneapolis:

Edina, St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, and Hopkins

What: Let's get started in keeping with the idea that Twin City Transplants want to support each other and would like to know more neighbors in the same boat as when we arrived.

This notion and types of actions to implement this are not new to me. I am pleased to see rising interest and give credit to those who have been promoting it and I hope to help.

Where:  Vitality's Bistro is centrally located in St. Louis Park (SLP), in a small mall, immediately west of SLP City Hall on Minnetonka Boulevard.  There is ample free parking in the lot and onstreet. See vitalisbistro.com for further details, including the menu.

How: I'm stepping up in the spirit of community and hosting monthly get-togethers at a Southwest Suburbs bistro with coffee, tea, diverse food (including sandwiches & sushi) and ice cream for people in this hub area. Something for everyone!

The venue is flexible enough to accommodate any and all of the possibilities listed below.

These monthly get-togethers are intended to be congruent with currently expressed interests and plans for building community within TCT.

I've selected a venue that will offer people opportunity to get together at first to meet and greet, then migrate through the space, as desired. The actual end time can be as late as Bistro closing at 9:00 p.m.-if people are hanging out. Please consider this is a business that is generously hosting us and plan to order something to drink and/or eat. This is deli-style ordering at a counter. I suggest ordering when you come in...you will get drinks immediately to have when you join. I'm advised the food will be ready a few minutes after you order...so you can already be meeting people while food is in preparation.

This recurring meetup event is a focal point for people to choose to:

to get to know who their neighbors are in the Southwest Suburbs region who are also Transplants, (in summertime, when the livin' is easy)

+get better acquainted with others over time

+have a friendly warm spot to socialize when the winter winds blow and celebrate summery time

+consider and individually create action item social exchanges to support each other as they know more neighbors. This would be an opportunity to decide to work an exchange with one or more individuals-- this could be ride sharing, picking up necessities if someone is sick and can't access them, etc. You are the creator of what this may be.  Doing this is not a requirement of showing up or an assignment--it's only an opportunity if people choose it at any point.

My tip about exchanging services is to look and see for yourself what you can realistically commit to-- in terms of your time, personal boundaries, preferences, hopes, and expectations- and willingness to be reliable with your word in the spirit of honor system. Whatever you work out independently through discussions with one or more other people is up to you and between you and the others you gravitate toward. It's been my experience that keeping it simple, clear, and specific can be very helpful.

Please remember that meetup is not intended as a business sales promotional venue.

We will still socialize-eat, drink, and be merry.

This meetup will repeat monthly on the first Thursdays of each month except July 4.

July's meetup will be scheduled and notice sent out for the second Thursday in July, July 11, 2013.

Cheers!

Rick, if you are still interested in coming July 11, please sign up. You are welcome.

I ask that people stick with the RSVP system as there are arrangements to make.

Lisa, as I understand it, you will continue to encourage and assist the subareas to organize and get their organizers. Of course, we are also all part of Transplants so there are still a variety of Transplant activities to meet people at who may be in our immediate vicinity.

Thanks Beth - yes I will continue those efforts. Have a wonderful time with your kick-off event this evening! I know you all will have a great time! :)

No worries Beth. You won't see me there July 11.

I cannot volunteer to organize because I travel too much. So I'll watch for other options. Best of luck with your group.

Rick, the Southwest suburbs area is the towns identified in my postings. The areas were established and agreed to by organizers, such as myself. 5.18. The expanse of the territories are intended to make sense, especially in severe winter conditions. I must say, in the nicest possible way, I am not volunteering to expand to include the Southern Suburbs, Burnsville or whatever other towns there may be are not spoken for. These areas were volunteered for, and agreed to, not assigned or spontaneously expanded.

Pls. contact Lisa for your options if you do not reside in the towns listed in this announcement. The areas are documented by Lisa, and she is the point of reference to find out. As far as I know, Southern Suburbs, including I believe Burnsville, still need an organizer to step up.

It may be even easier than you think to be an organizer this for your area and Lisa's help is available. You seem to understand the concept well. Thanks and best wishes.

Beth - I appreciate your efforts as you're more organized than any other location - including mine! While this effort gets going, I'd like to ask that we organizers stay flexible in terms of geographic boundaries. Someone asked me if she could attend our St. Paul suburbs meetup though she lives in a suburb farther north and I said that's fine. As you stated early on, this effort offers folks a chance to actually make new friends based on seeing the same people on a regular basis (think NORM on Cheers!). Maybe Rick will meet someone at your meetup who lives in or knows someone in Burnsville. On the other hand, if Rick in Burnsville needs someone to go to the store to pick up Nyquil when it's snowing hard, it would work best if he'd call someone living nearby to help him out. That's why I said it'd be great to organize by geographic location - but people will arrange the "helping part" out themselves. Thanks Beth!

I really like this concept and as someone new to the area with no family or developed social network, this is a great idea. Thanks to those who initiated and are hosting/coordinating these get togethers.

I am in Burnsville, a south suburb I guess. I would attend this meeting Thursday but I am traveling home to NY for the weekend. I will hope to attend the July 11 meeting. Am unable to volunteer to coordinate a south suburbs group. So until one is formed there, maybe this is my "home"?

    Thanks again...

    Rick

Also, why not think ridesharing, park and ridesharing, public transit links-save gas cost and safety in numbers when it gets like it gets here.

Note: our 2nd event for this posting is 7.11.2013. I've set up a signup for 7.11. Please do not sign up for 7.4, even if the system repeats that date.
    ___
The Southwest Suburbs, as listed above, was included in the network Lisa is referencing at that meeting at Davanni's in St. Paul's..5.18.
Although I was unable to attend the meeting, I stepped up for the SWSuburbs by posting that day, keeping with what I believed to be the intent of the discussion group that resulted in launching the network. I communicated with the group who co-hosted that meeting and am pleased with the results...we are on the same page.

I also hoped I could put out and share something of a model/working philosophy/practical direction that might be useful to others..
    I encourage people to contact Lisa for help to set up other specific areas. As Lisa reports, the southern burbs need an organizer. :}

Yes, please think WINTER and short drives to meet you TCT pals!!

    Thanks and Cheers, B.

Per Terri's comments, here is the complete listing of all the groups under this network which launched recently at Davanni's in St. Paul. http://www.meetup.com/Twin-Cities-Transplants/messages/boards/thread/34611832

Please note that the southern burbs currently need an organizer - Anna, are you game? :) If anyone wants to launch this for a specific area needing an organizer, email me directly and I'll help you get all set up.

This is an organic effort that is location based - think WINTER and short drives to meet with your TCT pals! :)

Hi Anna! There's actually a group for the south/southwest suburbs as well, but I can't recall who the organizer is for that area. Lisa Cook has done a marvelous job spearheading this endeavor and has all of the information for each section of town. Lisa, can you hook Anna up with the group in her area?

Terri, I hope it's eastern and southern too that you are starting., as I live in SE Bloomington. Sounds like a very nice idea that Beth has here.

Yes, Terri, of course. I'm pleased that you picked up what I did my best to convey..and thanks for the compliment. :)

Hi Beth! I'm the organizer for the Eastern Suburbs and want to start a recurring monthly get-together as well. Your explanation of the concept and goals of the smaller groups is wonderfully written. I'd like to borrow some of the wording if that's okay with you?

El, Eden Prairie was added via the 5.18 meeting & it's addition posted in comments. I've now reposted the whole announcement with this addition... & I remember meeting you too. :)

Everyone, thanks for acknowledging my effort to get this going.
    This is for everyone.

I'm also glad to clue people in re Vitali's Bistro- cozy, upbeat coffee house.
