Who: Residents of the Southwest Surburbs of Minneapolis:
Edina, St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, and Hopkins
What: Let's get started in keeping with the idea that Twin City Transplants want to support each other and would like to know more neighbors in the same boat as when we arrived.
This notion and types of actions to implement this are not new to me. I am pleased to see rising interest and give credit to those who have been promoting it and I hope to help.
Where: Vitality's Bistro is centrally located in St. Louis Park (SLP), in a small mall, immediately west of SLP City Hall on Minnetonka Boulevard. There is ample free parking in the lot and onstreet. See vitalisbistro.com for further details, including the menu.
How: I'm stepping up in the spirit of community and hosting monthly get-togethers at a Southwest Suburbs bistro with coffee, tea, diverse food (including sandwiches & sushi) and ice cream for people in this hub area. Something for everyone!
The venue is flexible enough to accommodate any and all of the possibilities listed below.
These monthly get-togethers are intended to be congruent with currently expressed interests and plans for building community within TCT.
I've selected a venue that will offer people opportunity to get together at first to meet and greet, then migrate through the space, as desired. The actual end time can be as late as Bistro closing at 9:00 p.m.-if people are hanging out. Please consider this is a business that is generously hosting us and plan to order something to drink and/or eat. This is deli-style ordering at a counter. I suggest ordering when you come in...you will get drinks immediately to have when you join. I'm advised the food will be ready a few minutes after you order...so you can already be meeting people while food is in preparation.
This recurring meetup event is a focal point for people to choose to:
+ to get to know who their neighbors are in the Southwest Suburbs region who are also Transplants, (in summertime, when the livin' is easy)
+get better acquainted with others over time
+have a friendly warm spot to socialize when the winter winds blow and celebrate summery time
+consider and individually create action item social exchanges to support each other as they know more neighbors. This would be an opportunity to decide to work an exchange with one or more individuals-- this could be ride sharing, picking up necessities if someone is sick and can't access them, etc. You are the creator of what this may be. Doing this is not a requirement of showing up or an assignment--it's only an opportunity if people choose it at any point.
My tip about exchanging services is to look and see for yourself what you can realistically commit to-- in terms of your time, personal boundaries, preferences, hopes, and expectations- and willingness to be reliable with your word in the spirit of honor system. Whatever you work out independently through discussions with one or more other people is up to you and between you and the others you gravitate toward. It's been my experience that keeping it simple, clear, and specific can be very helpful.
Please remember that meetup is not intended as a business sales promotional venue.
We will still socialize-eat, drink, and be merry.
This meetup will repeat monthly on the first Thursdays of each month except July 4.
July's meetup will be scheduled and notice sent out for the second Thursday in July, July 11, 2013.
