Potential Topics for 2014

At our Jan 2014, meeting we covered topics that might interest us for the rest of the year.

We still need to work out details of what to center the discussions on, but here's the strawman list:

  • Latest on Amber Smalltalk
  • what's new in Pharo
  • Newspeak (gilad?)
[--]Tim has talked with Gilad who is interested but not sure when he is next in the UK - might be a special non monday meet up
  • Squeak 4.5
  • Squeak JS

  • Sense/Scratch robotics (Tim)
Getting scratch to talk to a robot via the iPhone. We could run a session on how to use it - feedback on how it works - ideas about how it can be used - what educational ideas and exercises does it enable

  • xstreams
Xtreams is increasingly seen as the next generation of Streams. Get some hands on experience - how to use it and why it is better or just different from traditional Smalltalk Streams.
  • MVP vs mvvm vs Mvc vs Morphic
What are the pros and cons of these models and why do people keep coming back to them?
  • Cairo graphics (on the way out?)

  • Scaling Smalltalk - looking for options
  • Reactive Extensions (Frank/Nick?)
  • MatriX - Multi-core/multi-image for VisualWorks
  • What's interesting in Parallel /Multiprocessing (aka Gemstone - might someone be in town)? (Bruce)

The influence of Smalltalk

  • constraint systems (Bjorn f.) and influence in Xcode
  • functional programming does Smalltalk qualify?
  • monads in Smalltalk* - Smalltalk code example showing how monads are beneficial
  • raspberry PI and Smalltalk

lets do code (practice coding some problem)

  • promises and futures
  • Smalltalk build systems
    - JPMorgan build system, Sense Open University build system and Cincom ChannelStream build system as options to talk and compare
  • lessons learned in gbs - Magnus
  • native boost + osprocess + ffi
  • performance tuning Smalltalk systems

  • Elliot about jitting on arm
  • John Mcintosh - what's he working on?
  • Smalltalk IDE evolution (things in xcode/ idea/eclipse we want in Smalltalk)
