Storytelling the User Experience

Stories persuade, explain and engage. Storytelling is one of the most important skills for a UX Designer.

In order to create the ultimate user experience we must first tell a story that will make users connect to the product in a unique way. The story is the bridge to a good user experience.

Join Ilan Dray, founder and creative director of Inkod Hypera, a leading Israeli UX & GUI design studio, to discover how to create a fascinating story. In his presentation, Ilan will demonstrate how to communicate right the message to your audience by defining the product through storytelling and by creating a spectacular visual design.

Thank you Ilan , the presentation was impressive. The details of the approach would likely vary depending on the client type, but all the pieces were there in a crisp, concise, and visually appealing manner. I felt engaged and I learned.

I commented before the event itself that it is an inspirational discussion = a real challenge :)
I touched the heart of many people with insights but I understand that it's not easy for everyone to connect.

People forget their own story and always business oriented.
Cool design is not enough and that's why it's not working.
No scenario, acts, fantastic characters and NO story which define the unique concept of your product to make it stand out. 10 secs speech will be enough to touch the heart of someone ... and we saw it's not easy :) Just tease them ...
Be personal and full of integrity. Not with a marketing agenda.
    It will not work.

Finally think with your heart :) this is my invitation.
Totally free like to smell a flower ... but do you remember when the last time you smelt a flower? and if you did it so share your experience to someone else ... This is ultimate User Experience.

I'm always welcome to critics :)
and get always better & better.

So first of all, thanks ...
    still I will clarify:

The purpose of my lecture is to inspire the world.
I debate a conceptual approach and not try to teach story telling as you find in many free online courses:

    https://iversity.org/courses/the-future-of-storytelling

Academic can't be inspirational. The idea is NOT to teach how to do a cake + ingredients order + add a cherry on top to make it go WOW ... but much more to be mind set about the story itself (user experience DNA).

No story = No connection with the user = NO Experience!
UX = User Experience a Story.

    It's all about the concept.

Ilan and Avi, any meetup that provides company merchandise (or even only centers around or mentions the speaker's company name 5 times in the first 10 minutes) is an infomercial more than anything else, unless the meetup has been pitched and described as a meetup about the company. I really regret your writing ahead of the meetup that it is not an infomercial. It is mildly hard to fathom that. I would call it a commercial and not even an infomercial.

Also I didn't enjoy the fluffy title of the meetup, that is counter to describing the content of the meetup. I don't know if it's a matter of writing skill, command of English, lack of time, or etiquette, but something here was awfully miscalibrated.

I'd really really suggest spending more time about naming and describing the talk's content, be it through peer review or otherwise, and adding more integrity. Maybe peer review would help, and also the jargon of 'inspiring the world' is way too narcissistic and off-topic.
    It was regretful.

Avi, I don't think that any of us is unthankful of the group and that anyone wants to come and give his ideas. But criticism should be welcome.
I think when its more than one/two persons who have some criticism - maybe it needs some attention. I can tell from my point of view - I'm trying to minimize my meetups attendance to ones that will teach me the most - and should be in my field of interest. I try to understand what is the meetup about before RVSPing and looking at comments to see if there is more to know.

It seems that both other and I thought this is going to be something else.

Consistency is the key ... Offline as online you will need that the story keep you connect or teasing you to next scene (happening in advertising field ... when you tease with a campaign and 2 weeks after you know what is the product or service offer). In the digital, I think responsive so my UX/GUI fit whatever the media is from mobile, tablet to computers :)

      1 · November 1, 2013

    • ilan D.

The story is a chronological sequences of logic events ... i love also Tarantino style when it's non logic and you have multiple stories happening in different places and you get the connection only at the end :) and sometime not :P ... so finally, if you give a certain flow to your experience and as i explained with the Tollmans example, you keep consistent the concept so wherever you are the story will follow you. Also the use of different resolution, channels or media offer you to give added values to your story ... as for example the possibility to use touch or gesture that makes you interact with the action itself.

Felt to me the talk was more about branding than user experience. It's true that the branding of a product has an impact on the user experience, but what I was missing is the storytelling of my app. How do I create the correct flow between screens? How can my widgets be arranged in a manner that will attract the user to follow a certain pattern? How should a story affect my palette?
I was hoping for a talk more in the line of these posts:

That's awesome! As I said, I have no issue with the field of marketing and branding, but I'm not that interested in these subjects. On the other hand, 'Storytelling the UX' is something I would love to hear about. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Again - no issue with the fact that it wasn't the idea of the talk. The only issue I have is the fact that the description of the meetup mentioned 'Storytelling the UX' but I did not get to hear a talk about that subject. For me, a guy who is not interested in marketing advice (since it's not my field), the meetup was irrelevant, and I wouldn't have come if I had known it was going to be on that subject. That's only me, of course. I'm sure a lot of other people might enjoy your talk, but I personally feel a bit mislead.

Regarding the money - You said:
"I invite you to Tal Florentin courses @ John Bryce where I explain exactly the points that you are talking about" I assume that the mentioned courses cost money, don't they?

Avi - Thanks, but I have not the knowledge to share. I come to these meetups in order to learn. Maybe some day when I'll have something interesting to talk about I'll offer to talk, but until then I'm mainly a listener (and the occasional commenter)

I wanted to specially thank Ilan Dray for the great inspiration lecture.

Inspiration that what I got from it.
Driving home I got great idea and I worked over night to develop it.
The Idea How to explain your business in 10 seconds.
I am re engineering the design and concept of our Login page.
As I understood that till now we concentrated in explaining technology of the site and the registration instead of concentrating on creating the passion to want to know us.

The 2 question I asked Ilan and I only thought about it in his lecture were:
    1. What is the music you love the most.
    2. What do you think when you listen to it.

These 2 question are going to lead the experience of first 10 seconds in our site.

Hope next week our programmers will finish the work from my new design and we will implement it in the site.

You are welcome to check next week these changes

    Hi,
I read the description few times and I still couldn't capture what this talk will really be, whether it will just walk through a sample app, be an infomercial, or something really different about a really new meaningful perspective to design... Can you say which of the three it will mostly be please? Any background links that can hint at it or other way to convince it is not yet another product walk through? Sorry but the current description is too hyped to tell..... Thanks!

It's an introduction of 20 minutes debate about digital story telling :) The purpose of this presentation is to inspire the audience about the importance of the concept when you define any kind of product even not digitally. Of course I can't pretend in 20 minutes to give the full 6 hours course about this subject that I teach in John Bryce Academy but it's more a teasing about how to make it go WOW :) It's definitively not infomercial and my agenda is to give my vision about the subject and one example of how to approach it ... Just as I said to inspire and invite the audience to think outside of the box.
There is many online free courses about this subject but I'm not coming from theory angle but real practical case stories :) The insight of this presentation (for any level from beginners to top professional) is to remind you that anything have a DNA that you can define to be different and to success.
Lot of people saw this specific re-edited presentation and I can tell you that it clarify them the beauty
