Discussing "Just Enough Research" by Hall

PLEASE NOTE: Registration will close the day before the event (Tuesday 10/22 at 4:30 PM) to accomodate building security at Critical Mass. Please be sure to bring your ID to check in.

Selected by popular vote, our next book will be Just Enough Research by Erika Hall.

"Design research is a hard slog that takes years to learn and time away from the real work of design, right? Wrong.

Good research is about asking more and better questions, and thinking critically about the answers. It’s something every member of your team can and should do, and which everyone can learn, quickly. And done well, it will save you time and money by reducing unknowns and creating a solid foundation to build the right thing, in the most effective way.

In Just Enough Research, co-founder of Mule Design Erika Hall distills her experience into a brief cookbook of research methods. Learn how to discover your competitive advantages, spot your own blind spots and biases, understand and harness your findings, and why you should never, ever hold a focus group. You’ll start doing good research faster than you can plan your next pitch."

Please remember that you can come to the meeting even if you haven't read the book, though we do ask that you make an effort to familiarize yourself with the topic.

Why are we charging an RSVP fee? See here.

Hope to see you soon!

Please note: RSVPs will close the day before the event so we can give our host an accurate head-count.

Great discussion, a variety of ideas. I especially loved the part where we discussed the role/boundaries of a ux researcher or ux professional, and the importance of communication (i.e. everything is communication!).

Here's an interesting blog post on adding UX to Agile development, with includes some info on research and modeling:

It's always interesting to read a book through the lens of personal experience and then discuss it with people who shed more light on (and raise more questions about) the subject matter. I left Critical Mass with a lot more food for thought.

Wanted to thank everyone for coming out on behalf of Critical Mass. If anyone knows of any other Meetups looking for a space to use, feel free to point them over to me if you think our space could accommodate them - we'd love to host more! You can reach me at [masked].

UX Book Club is probably my favorite Meetup. Such a diverse group of people willing to openly share their wealth of knowledge. The topic on Research was a really interesting one and it was great to hear everyone's varying experiences with it. Thanks to all of the hosts and attendees for making this a great meeting.

This was my first UX Book Club experience, and I really enjoyed it. Even though research is my comfort zone, I definitely feel like I learned a lot both from the book and from our conversation. Thanks everyone!

I think we had an interesting conversation about different levels of research. One point I really enjoyed is when Sharon shared her interest in working with disruption within an organization.
