Discussing "The Shape of Design" by Chimero

  • October 24, 2012 · 6:30 PM

For our October meeting we will be discussing The Shape of Design by Frank Chimero.

Thanks to Zeke for hosting us at the brand new GrubHub offices!

"The Shape of Design is a book about design as a method to plan and create change. It documents the hidden steps, methods, and thoughts of the creative process to produce a field guide for the emerging skillset: improvising, creating frameworks, storytelling, and delighting audiences. It’s a handbook that explores the qualities that make for great design so we may dream big, apply the lessons to our processes, then go get our hands dirty to shape this world.."

Please remember that you can come to the meeting even if you haven't read the book. Hope to see you soon!

I first learned about CI from the book "MADE TO STICK, Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die". By the way authors Chip and Dan Heath framed the Commander's Intent statement I thought it was a great way to manage during unpredictable and evolving times. When boiled down to its essence, and communicated in kid friendly terms, it's also an interesting way of preparing kids for life:-) Valuable find Ray.

    Thanks for the links Gemma.

Thanks to the person who mentioned "Commander's Intent" (Roy, maybe?) I've lost part of my afternoon reading up on it. If anyone else is interested, check out these two papers: National Letter of Promulgation - NATO, 2000 (Section III - Operational Design)

"The commander’s intent links the mission and concept of operations. It describes the end state and key tasks that, along with the mission, are the basis for subordinates’ initiative. Commanders may also use the commander’s intent to explain a broader purpose beyond that of the mission statement. The mission and the commander’s intent must be understood two echelons down."
