Group Performance: Honolulu Avenue Strummers - La Canada Fiesta Days Concert

Exciting news! Following our success in the Montrose Christmas Parade, I have been approached by the organizers of La Canada Flintridge's Fiesta Days to have us do a seated show as part of their festivities!

Fiesta Days is a wonderful community celebration taking place over Memorial Day weekend. You can read all about it here: http://www.lacanadaflintridge.com/events-page.html

They would like to have us do a 30-40 minute performance at 7:00pm on Saturday night, May 24, in front of the gazebo at Memorial Park. Our performance will be followed by the outdoor screening of Frozen (the sing-along version - you and your friends & families are more than welcome to stay for that as well, I plan to!).

They will provide chairs and amplification (a standing vocal mic and a few scattered seated level mics) - we can bring our own music stands.

My vision for this should follow nicely from what we've been practicing already at our monthly jams; I'll put together a set list soon (suggestions are welcome, just keep in mind it's a family event so we want to stay mainstream and All-American.) We will mostly play & sing together, seated in a wide semi-circle so we can keep in visual time with one another.

I'd love a couple of players who feel vocally brave to volunteer to sing the lead in a song of your choosing - the rest of us will be your "backing orchestra" and play along, perhaps sing harmony on the chorus, etc. I'm also thinking of throwing a couple of good old banjolele tunes in there and have a banjolele set for those of us who have them.

Rehearsal-wise, we will work on these tunes at the next two Montrose Elbow Room jams (4/19 & 5/17). I definitely want us to have a final formal rehearsal the week leading up to the concert, perhaps a weeknight evening, but we can discuss this as we get closer and decide based on everyone's availability. Good news is, we will have our music in front of us, so while we should nevertheless be familiar enough to "perform" without staring at our music, we won't have to memorize this time!

Please let me know right away if you are interested! Previous participation in the parade is not at all necessary, but I would like to have us wear Hawaiian shirts (or Hawaiian print dresses for the ladies) so we match, so please try and track one down if you don't have this item in your ukulele wardrobe (Ebay has lots.)

Looking forward to performing with you all again, in a much WARMER setting!

Bambi - thank you for the very thorough and extensive email that you just sent regarding rehearsal notes! I didn't want to send a reply all for this but I can try to get us all actual yellow ribbons for us to tie to our instruments as a nice commemorative decoration. Unless someone has enough for all of us, I'll head to the fabric store for those.

    • Bambi Leigh Hale

That would be really lovely! Do you mind getting a spool of yellow ribbon? We can tie them on Friday night so we have one less thing to do the day of. Thanks!

Good Morning Strummers! We had a fabulous first rehearsal yesterday with 6 of us. We spent some time working on a few of our songs - I have notes and revised charts to share, but the 1000 character limit here is driving me batty. Please send me your direct email and I'll send it out as a group email. If nobody minds, I'll send it out with the recipients visible, that way we can ask questions, discuss, etc. Still working on creating a Facebook page for The Montrose Ukulele Jam.... soon!
    I'm at [masked]. Thanks!

Is everyone on facebook? maybe we can create an event page for this and bring the discussion there?

    2 · April 22

  • Bambi Leigh Hale

I created separate event pages for our scheduled rehearsals. Please have a look under "Suggested" and RSVP to the ones you can attend. Please note this Sunday's is at 10am, the other two Sundays remain at 12pm. I love that you guys are finding tweeks and fixes - Tooch also had some chords additions for Happy - I'll get his notes this Saturday and post it here.

  • Bambi Leigh Hale

After our awesome first practice this weekend, here is the current song list:

    Ring of Fire
    Under the Boardwalk
I'll Melt With You (C/Fadd9 version)
    Pearly Shells
Little Grass Shack (music to come)
    Five Foot Two (banjolele)
    The Rainbow Connection (banjolele)
    The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Do You Want to Build a Snowman (Alissa leads)
    Ho Hey
    Happy
Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World (if time)
    Happy Trails (if time)

I'll play with these and work on timing. If we need to trim or shorten some songs, we can. Our next scheduled rehearsal isn't til next month's Montrose jam, 5/17, but that's only 1 week before the performance. Since we're a smaller group, I'd love to see if we get some other practice times and get really comfortable with playing together, add some zing to our arrangements. I'm good all day Sundays and Saturday afternoons except 5/3 - might folks be able to meet Sundays at noon over the next few weeks? We could do Two Strike Park or my place just up the street?

    • Pauline Mauro

I'll be there this Sunday 12-2pm. I worked out riff chords and a strum pattern for "Happy" with my uke teacher. Will share with those interested. Funny- the strumming rhythm sounds like a variation of "Tequila"!

      1 · April 23

    • Bambi Leigh Hale

Pauline, we moved this Sunday's rehearsal to 10am to not conflict with Kok's jam. Hope you can still make it. I created a new event page for it, it's currently under suggested events. Please RSVP to bump it up - thanks!

      April 23

  • Dave

For "Happy" people who don't play the "riff" could play these chords everywhere the riff occurs.
    Fm7 Bb C Bb7
...should work, I don't have a guitar or uke with me.

    April 23

    • Pauline Mauro

Hey Dave- Those are the same exact chords my uke instructor gave me on Monday!! For the "middle" part he said I could play F7 with a down down(muted) up up pattern.

      1 · April 23

    • Pauline Mauro

The strumming pattern he suggested for the verses was down down (slight pause) up up (faster beat here) up down up down up down up.

      April 23

  • miss judy

I've scanned and posted the chords for "My Little Grass Shack" to the Group photo album. It's the version that I have been playing in my ukulele class. It's very straight forward and has the simple up/down strum. Here's the link to the photo in the album (couldn't figure out how else to share it with the group). http://photos1.meetupstatic.com...

Just noticed this Sunday's (4/27) practice overlaps with Kok's Backyard Jam. I'm happy to move our practice time earlier if that enables folks to attend both events - could people make 10am?

    • JOHN "MAXX" HIROTO

Or I can wait until saturday

      April 22

    • Bambi Leigh Hale

Thanks Maxx, I think I have all the songs, I'll copy some packets. I'm still inclined to put Ring of Fire first and build up to the Frozen tune... we can always take a vote later. I'll also create a new event for this Sunday's rehearsal in case folks have missed this in the long thread - please RSVP there so it pops up.

  • Bambi Leigh Hale

Was just asked by the event coordinator to move our performance time up a bit to start at 7:00. There's a good reason why which I'll explain when I see you. And we shouldn't have to worry about playing in the dark now. ALSO - they asked if we would consider also playing in the parade IF THEY WERE TO SUPPLY A FLATBED TRUCK for us to ride on! The parade is on Memorial Day, Monday 5/26, starting at 10:30am (call time 9:00am) along Foothill Bl in La Canada. We could certainly do some of the same songs in rotation. Please let me know who's up for the parade as well - I said I'd get back to her with an answer next week!

    1 · April 22

    • miss judy

Alissa's got a point. But the image of all of us bouncing around on a back of a truck is just irresistible to me. Maybe we can pre-record our performance and replay it whilst we strum-synch during the actual time of the parade? :P

      April 22

    • Bambi Leigh Hale

It would be very fun, but mostly I want our Saturday evening show to rock, I don't want to over extend ourselves. Unless we have a good half-dozen players on the truck, it's not worth it, so holla back if you're in. I'm totally fine either way. We would definitely choose the easiest songs with simple chords, like Melt with You.

      3 · April 22

  • JOHN "MAXX" HIROTO

a flat bed truck??? wow are we moving up in the world or what? It still wouldn't hurt to get those small lights, you know, just in case.

    April 22

  • Bambi Leigh Hale

As you practice Ring of Fire, have a listen to how Johnny did it for structure and style. Notice the riff is repeated after the first 3 lines of the verse - some can strum and others can riff over the strums. Also notice the fun bg vocals on the chorus. http://youtu.be/Hbo6WhbNRsc

I'm open for any time except this Sunday 4-27. I like the colorful clothing, but I see the uniform "group" color thing. I think we should open with "Snowman" after all it is a disney night...I'm sure we can play with the order, especially to see how time goes and build in time for all the thunderous applause and cries of MORE! Are we going to announce every song or just bang away?

    2 · April 21

    • Bambi Leigh Hale

We can announce some, others sorta announce themselves (Ring of Fire).

      April 21

  • Bambi Leigh Hale

Hi Robert, glad you can join us! We'll work on choosing the songs this Saturday so I'll post the list here once we decide.
Any predominantly RED & white Hawaiian print shirt will fit the bill - lots of these on Ebay and second-hand stores.

    • Ironika Leigh

Yay, Alissa!! We'd look so cute (and, gentlemanly, of course) in bright colors of summer and the islands.

I am looking forward to it. I will be out of town on the 19th of April but available on the 17th and 24th of May.
You will have to tell me what shirt to get since I missed the Christmas Parade.
