Uli Baba's is an experimental Burning Man theme camp. We are a synthesis of fun loving Moroccans and fun loving secular people.
We are looking for hardworking, responsible, creative people who like to have fun to join us in creating a Moroccan Slave trade caravan that will be making camp at Black Rock this summer. If you think you might fit the bill, then sign up.
Uli Baba’s is a camp of friends and acquaintances primarily from the San Diego area. Many of us are also active in a local secular group. At Uli Baba’s, we come together to offer the community both low-key and high-entertainment daytime activities.
Uli Baba is a Moroccan slaver.
He selects fine specimens from across the desert city of Black Rock and invites, corrals, and cajoles them into selling their personal talents and labors at a price of their own choosing.
On three (or four, pending popular demand) afternoons, our fine Moroccan tent (from Morocco!) will welcome people with an open bar. Slaves are plied with drinks, buyers are plied with watered-down drinks, and good hookah is smoked by all. Belly-dancers recruited from the Black Rock community will be invited to entertain while slaves are shackled, named, and catalogued according to their personal talents and labors. Experienced slavers help slaves and buyers discover their talents and bid offers. Slaves learn that, of course, they get to choose their buyer whether by heckling the buyers to make better offers or by submissively and discreetly signaling the caller that their desires have been met. Uli Baba’s Horny Theives run the show, from tending bar to calling auction. We also coach slaves and buyers, sell ourselves in slavery, and buy slaves. Slaves especially enjoy being bought to performs their labors at the next auction as bartenders, hawkers, and pre-show entertainers. Slaves who fetch no bids will be prostrated in the front of the crowd and dispatched by the executioner.
Uli Baba’s fine Moroccan tent is put to use throughout the day:
On three early mornings, our campmate Walid hosts P90X workouts, modified for high altitude, with no workout gear other than comfortable clothing required.
On three late mornings, a no-host mask-making workshop is offered to the community at large. Masks, fabric, paint, tin-foil and other moop-free decorations materials are provided along with instructions, a sample book, and a camera to record participants’ work. Trash bags are provided and our Moroccan tent is wind-protected. This is a moop-free craft social!
New in 2011, Uli Baba plans to host a party for atheists but open to all! Details pending. This party is likely to be during ‘cocktail hour’ or just after dinner time, one evening only.
Finally, our tent is a wonderful chill space with comfortable carpeting, couches, and pillows. Soft music is played at times. People enjoying taking off their shoes, smoking hookah, playing cards, and making new friends.
Belly Dancers are important to Uli Baba Uli Baba is already working with the community to identify Burning Belly Dancers who would like to entertain slaves and buyers before our auctions. Pending popular demand, Uli Baba will work with the belly dancing community across the desert city of Black Rock to host a belly dance-off in his fine Moroccan tent.
