Catskills hike on Escarpment Trail vicinity of North/South Lake Campground

  • May 5, 2013 · 10:30 AM
  • See "Directions" in the text below

We'll start from the Schutt Rd parking area and take the Escarpment Trail.  This trail has almost too many viewpoints to count, but the trail description mentions six.  The escarpment is the drop-off into the Kaaterskill Clove, which has been formed by the Kaaterskill Creek.  At times the Escarpment Trail gets somewhat close to the drop-off, so this is not a hike for people or pets who have great difficulties with heights.  We'll return by a different route to make a loop.  Map 40 of the NY/NJ Trail Conference's Catskill Trails map set shows this hike.  A description of the hike can be found here:
http://www.nynjtc.org/hike/catskill-escarpment-trail

Round trip distance:  4.7 miles

Elevation change:  has ups and downs, but no mountain involved

Level of hike:  intermediate

We'll hike at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind

What to bring:  water, snacks/lunch

Carpooling:  Because getting to the trailhead is quite a long drive for those of us who live in the New Paltz area or south or east of New Paltz, I suggest we carpool from the Park and Ride lot at New Paltz, just off exit 18 of I87 (NYS Thruway).  After going through the toll booths, the Park and Ride lot is immediately on the left.  We'll meet here at 9:15Please email me if you want to meet here; if I don't hear from you I'll assume you're going directly to Schutt Rd (the trailhead) and will not wait for you.

Directions to Schutt Rd parking area (the trailhead).  Meet here at 10:30:

Do not attempt to use the "map" link near the top of this listing - it will take you to New York City.

Cancellation info: If I need to cancel I'll send email the night before.

Great day! One of my favorite areas to hike shared with a terrific group of people! Lots of laughs, and good camaraderie made this a top ten! Thanks Jeff for organizing, and also thanks to all for a great time!

From New Paltz you can do either of two things. To carpool, park in the New Paltz park and ride lot, which is just before the I87 toll booths, on the right. To go directly to the trailhead, click on the link underneath "Directions to Schutt Rd ...." above and follow directions under "From the south". These start off with you getting onto I87 going north.

I really wanted to do this hike but forgot a few months ago I had promised to do something else that day. I hope I can go on another hike with Ulster County Outdoors soon.

Is anyone coming from NYC that I could carpool with? If not, is there a bus stop that is close to either of the meetup points?
