Catskills Hike to Giant Ledge

Level of hike: intermediate

Distance: 3.8 miles round trip

Terrain: Extremely rocky trail (but not rock scrambling) for first 0.75 mi; elevation gain of 1100 feet

What to bring: Water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, bug repellant

Map: NY-NJ Trail Conference #42 (may be 142 in newer mapset) - Central Catskills

Suggested donation: $2 (first time free).  This is to help offset meetup's annual subscription fee to the Organizer.

Relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.

The main attraction of this hike is the spectacular view from Giant Ledge, which is actually a series of eight ledges looking in various directions.  The mountains of the Central Catskills are on display!  Plan to bring a light extra layer to shield you from any wind, as the ledges are quite exposed.  I plan to allow plenty of time at the ledges to drink in the views.

Although this hike is not long in distance, the rocky trail combined with elevation gain make it not be a beginner hike.

Carpooling: Because getting to the trailhead is quite a long drive for those of us who live in the New Paltz area or south or east of New Paltz, I suggest we carpool from the Park and Ride lot at New Paltz, just off exit 18 of I87 (NYS Thruway).  After going through the toll booths, the Park and Ride lot is immediately on the left.  We'll meet here at 8:55Please email me or post a comment if you want to meet here; if I don't hear from you I'll assume you're going directly to the trailhead and will not wait for you.

Directions to trail head; meet here at 10:30: http://www.meetup.com/Ulster-County-NY-Outdoors/messages/boards/thread/22897482

Cancellation info: If there is a possibility that the hike will be cancelled due to weather, etc, I'll send email the evening before the hike.

    Jeff,
thank you for the ride. It just seems wasteful to drive a lot of
cars all the way to Big Indian. I will offer to drive, but I suspect
you want your own marker car.

I will meet you in the parking lot of "The Black Bear" an out of
business restaurant on Route 28 in West Hurley.

    Directions
    1. After exiting the Thruway go west on Route 28 towards Pine Hill
    2. You will pass 4 traffic lights:
    - by the car dealers
    - Forest Hill Dr.
    - Zena Road (Stewarts)
    - Route 375 (towards Woodstock)
    3. One mile past the Rt. 375 turn off, on the right is an abandoned restaurant called the Black Bear. It has a big sign in front. I will be in front at 8:20 in my silver Honda Civic.

Unless I hear from you , I will be there at 8:20 and just wait for you.

    Thank you,
    Bonnie [masked]

    Jeff,
If you have room, I would like to carpool with you from Route 28 near Route 375 (the turn to Woodstock). If you have room, let me know and I will send more detailed directions. If not, I will meet you at the trail head.
