We invite 5 members of Ulster County Outdoors to join our sister group Mid-Hudson Valley Explorers to hike Whittenberg Mountain. We would like to be on the trailhead by 10:00am since the days are getting shorter and this is approximately an 8 mile round trip. There is quite a bit of elevation so please plan to be on the trailhead for approximately 7 hours or more. Remember that explorer hikes are unstructured. This trail is suitable for the more hearty hikers. Although we will pace ourselves, this trail can be challenging at times.
The most straight-forward approach is to park at the Woodland Valley State Campgrounds and pay a seasonal fee of $4. Follow the red markers to the red-blazed trail. Immediately the trail gives you a hint of what is to come. There is an ascent to even get to the log book! The trail winds around and down and then up. Near the end of the 3.9 mile hike to the summit there are some interesting rock scrambles. When you arrive at the top of Wittenberg Mountain there is a large, open rock shelf. The view is unobstructed by trees and the Ashokan Reservoir lies below. From late spring to late fall, there are usually a large number of hikers at the top taking in the excellent view. After we have enjoyed the view and the company, we will retrace our route back to the parking area.
