Sam's Point Preserve hike

  • See "Directions" in the text below

Distance:  about 5 miles round trip

Terrain:  Some of it is easy; the rest involves a trail with football sized rocks under foot, so one must be careful.

Elevation change:  There's some climbing involved.  Not sure of the number of feet, but it's significantly less than a typical Catskill Mountain.

Sam's Point Preserve lies along the eastern side of Minnewaska State Park, not far from the village of Ellenville, NY.  Highlights of the hike are Sam's Point, which has spectacular views, and Verkeerder Kill Falls, the highest falls in the Shawangunks.  There is an option for those who wish to do it to visit the Ice Caves.  This adds about 2.5 miles and you should have a trail map, as I do not plan to do this.

For a description of the hike:
but note that this description includes the side trip to the ice caves, which is optional on our hike.

What to bring:  lunch, plenty of water, $10 per car parking fee

Parking and limited attendance:
Parking is limited!  This is the reason for the 9:30 start and the attendance limited to 10. Also, groups larger than this can only come on Mondays and Fridays.  Sorry, no guests allowed this time.  I highly encourage folks who are coming from the same area to work out carpooling arrangements.

Directions: Use "Get Directions" link on the website of the Preserve.
For those using GPS, google maps, or mapquest, putting in Cragsmoor, NY will get you very close.  Then use the directions in the link above to go the last few miles.

Cancellation info: If I need to cancel I'll send email the night before.

Liability Waiver: By signing up for and participating in this event you acknowledge that you have read and agreed to the liability waiver at this address:

Perfect weather, beautiful vistas and an unusually compatible group; would be nice to meet up on another hike someday.

I am not feeling that well and I don't think I am going to be able to make the hike tomorrow. Have a great hike.

If anyone is coming from Kingston or North of Kingston, we could meet at a designated area and carpool from there. Let me know.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
