Catskills Hike to Tremper Mountain via Phoenicia Trail

  • Nov 2, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • See "Directions" in the text below

Level of hike: intermediate

Distance: 6.2 miles round trip

Elevation gain:  2000 ft

What to bring: Water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen

Map: NY-NJ Trail Conference #41 (may be 141 in newer mapset) - Northeastern Catskills

Suggested donation: $2   This is to help offset meetup's annual subscription fee to the Organizer.

Relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.

The trail head is near the hamlet of Phoenicia, NY

The main attraction of this hike is the spectacular view from the Tremper fire tower, which has been renovated.  One can see Slide, Cornell, and Wittenberg mountains; the peaks of the Devil's Path, and the Ashokan reservoir.  This is a discovery hike for me, meaning I've never been on this trail.  If the 2000 ft elevation gain seems daunting, remember that we will take it slow and stop for breathers.  Since darkness comes earlier at this time of year, I suggest you bring a headlamp or flashlight, just in case.  I do not expect these to be needed.

Carpooling: Because getting to the trailhead is quite a long drive for those of us who live in the New Paltz area or south or east of New Paltz, I suggest we carpool from the Park and Ride lot at New Paltz, just off exit 18 of I87 (NYS Thruway).  After going through the toll booths, the Park and Ride lot is immediately on the left.  We'll meet here at 8:15Please email me or post a comment if you want to meet here; if I don't hear from you I'll assume you're going directly to the trailhead and will not wait for you.

Directions to trail head; meet here at 9:30:

Cancellation info: If there is a possibility that the hike will be cancelled due to weather, etc, I'll send email the evening before the hike.

I am so so sorry I didn't show. This group usually has it's hikes on Sunday and I made the bad assumption it was today. I am sorry if I deprived someone of a spot on what sounds like a great hike
