Level of hike: intermediate
Distance: 3.8 miles round trip
Terrain: Extremely rocky trail (but not rock scrambling) for first 0.75 mi; elevation gain of 1100 feet
What to bring: Water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen
Map: NY-NJ Trail Conference #42 (may be 142 in newer mapset) - Central Catskills
Suggested donation: $2 This is to help offset meetup's annual subscription fee to the Organizer.
Relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.
The main attraction of this hike is the spectacular view from Giant Ledge, which is actually a series of eight ledges looking in various directions. The mountains of the Central Catskills are on display! Plan to bring a light extra layer to shield you from any wind, as the ledges are quite exposed. I plan to allow plenty of time at the ledges to drink in the views.
Although this hike is not long in distance, the rocky trail combined with elevation gain make it not be a beginner hike.
Carpooling: Because getting to the trailhead is quite a long drive for those of us who live in the New Paltz area or south or east of New Paltz, I suggest we carpool from the Park and Ride lot at New Paltz, just off exit 18 of I87 (NYS Thruway). After going through the toll booths, the Park and Ride lot is immediately on the left. We'll meet here at 8:25. Please email me or post a comment if you want to meet here; if I don't hear from you I'll assume you're going directly to the trailhead and will not wait for you.
