This is a scout hike: I have never hiked Breakneck to Mt. Beacon Distance: 5-6 miles Many groups have hiked from Breakneck to Mt. Beacon. The Breakneck Ridge and Mt. Beacon hikes are all very familiar to our group. Now let's connect them. The 2-3 miles up the Breakneck Ridge white trail to the South Beacon Tower is the unknown territory. Seems simple enough to follow though. Plan: We will hike the 1 mile rock scrammble up Breakneck Ridge (the fun part starting at 100 ft and reaching to about 1000 ft) then follow the white trail up to Sunset Point (1200 ft). We may want a lunch break here with the view. We'll continue a bit further up to another view point (1400 ft). Then we'll reach the South Beacon Tower (1500 ft) which of course has a fantastic view. This is the 2nd option for lunch as it is all down from here. We can decide together when to lunch. For anyone who has never been to the Casino (about 1,200 ft), we can briefly stop to take in the view. The final descent is about 1000 ft in a mile. I am so excited!!!!
Let's meet at Mt. Beacon and car shuttle to Breakneck. For anyone not familiar, both trailheads are on/right off of 9D. Then we will be with most of our cars at the end of the hike. There is an option to head for lunch outdoors at The Depot or another local spot, if so desired. I am open to restaurant suggestions. IF YOU ARE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. The views from Breakneck Ridge Rock Scramble are breathtaking. Mount Beacon is the second highest point in the Hudson Highlands. Depending on the map, it may be called Mount Beacon or Beacon Mountain . The mountain consists of two peaks. The northern peak is 1531ft and has a series of radio antennas on its summit. The higher southern peak is 1610ft and has a lookout tower on its summit. On a clear day one can see the New York City skyline from the summit as well as views of the town of Beacon and the majority of the Highlands (including Storm King, Breakneck Ridge, and little Sugarloaf) Directions: Police activity is high in this area.
