Hike to Vernooy Kill Falls

Beginner hike

Distance is 3.6 miles round trip

No mountains involved, but hike is steadily uphill on the way to the falls

Hike will be led at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.  If your interest is in hiking as fast as possible, this hike is probably not for you.

The hike takes us through forest with quite a variety of trees: white pine; hemlock; chestnut, red and black oak; red, sugar, and striped maple; yellow birch; and mountain laurel. Vernooy Kill Falls is at the end of the hike. The falls drop about 60 feet over Catskill shale ledges in a series of cascades! Some of the ledges impound significant-sized pools.  The image for this hike was taken at the falls. You may want to bring a bathing suit - however, there is no place to change except the woods.

According to my guide book, the Vernooy Kill runs even in severe drought, so we should have a decent amount of water coming down the falls.

What to bring: water, lunch, bug repellant, sunscreen

Directions to trail head: From US 209 in Kerhonkson, turn North onto Ulster County 3 (Samsonville Rd). Go for 3.5 miles. At the sign for Veritas Villa, bear left onto Lower Cherrytown Rd. Go for 1.4 miles. At the intersection with Cherrytown Rd and Upper Cherrytown Rd, bear right onto Upper Cherrytown. Go 3.1 miles to marked parking on the right.

Cancellation info: If I need to cancel, I'll email the "Yes" folks the evening before the hike.

Definitely worth braving the elements to see the Falls so active! Irene took a toll on the trail, but we took our time and had a great hike!

We braved a few rain drops and were rewarded with an awesome Vernooy Falls - so much water! Had a lot of nice conversation and looked at interesting mushrooms - a lot of mushrooms. Welcome to Anastasia, a new member on her first hike with us.

What is going on with all trails being closed in Ulster county? I received Jeff's email. Can you explain what that means?
