Level of hike: Beginner to Intermediate
Distance: 5.0 miles round trip
Elevation gain: 1400 feet
Terrain: Most of the hike is on a woods road which climbs moderately but relentlessly
What to bring: Water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, bug repellant
Map: NY-NJ Trail Conference #41 (may be 141 in newer mapset) - Northeast Catskills
The trail we'll follow is usually called the Overlook spur trail. The main attractions of this hike are the spectacular views at the top. After the climbing is mostly done, we will take a path off the woods road which will bring us to several bare ledges with excellent views. Once at the top, there is a fire tower to climb which gives 360 degree views! Plan to bring a light extra layer to shield you from any wind, as the view points are quite exposed. I plan to allow plenty of time at the top to drink in the views.
Other attractions include a Tibetan Buddhist monastery across the road from the trail head, and the ruins of the Overlook Mountain House
We'll hike at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind. On the ascent I plan to take as many rest stops as anybody needs. I've rated this hike between beginner and intermediate because of the elevation gain. If you're a beginner who is in good physical shape, come join us.
Do not attempt to use the map link above or the GPS coordinates on it - will take you to NYC.
