Announcing a new Meetup for Ulster County Outdoors!
What: Hike to Vernooy Kill Falls
When: Saturday, June 5,[masked]:30 AM
Vernooy Kill Falls Trailhead
576 Upper Cherrytown Rd
Kerhonkson, NY 12446
The hike takes us through forest with quite a variety of trees: white pine; hemlock; chestnut, red and black oak; red, sugar, and striped maple; yellow birch; and mountain laurel. Vernooy Kill Falls is at the end of the hike. The falls drop about 60 feet over Catskill shale ledges in a series of cascades! Some of the ledges impound significant-sized pools. According to my guide book, the Vernooy Kill runs even in severe drought, so we should have a decent amount of water coming down the falls. The image for this hike was taken at the falls.
If the group is up for it, we could hike beyond the falls on the Greenville Trail, which goes to Balsam Swamp, the balsam bog headwaters of the Vernooy Kill. This red spruce-balsam fir swamp is a relict of the glacial age.
Round-trip distance is 3.6 miles. Hike will be done at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.
What to bring: water and lunch
Directions to trail head:
From US 209 in Kerhonkson, turn North onto Ulster County 3 (Samsonville Rd). Go for 3.5 miles. At the sign for Veritas Villa, bear left onto Lower Cherrytown Rd. Go for 1.4 miles. At the intersection with Cherrytown Rd and Upper Cherrytown Rd, bear right onto Upper Cherrytown. Go 3.1 miles to marked parking on the right.
If I need to cancel, I'll email the "Yes" folks the evening before the hike.
