Announcing a new Meetup for Ulster County Outdoors! What
: Camping: 1 or 2 Nights with Optional Hike on SaturdayWhen
: Friday, August 27,[masked]:00 PM
We had such a blast on our first campout. It was asked if I could set up another event. So... here we go... I am so excited to camp again with everyone. New faced are extremely welcomed. More wonderful memories will be created and cherished.
The site is an actual campground. It is however a primitive campground. It has several camp spots and a fire pit. We lucked out with Judy's help and found a magical spot (as Herb called it) with our very own swimhole. It has an outhouse but no showers or electricity (hence primitive). Showers can be taken in the stream. It was rejuvenating for me to bath in the stream. If this particular spot is occupied, there are several other campground spots available with a shared swimhole.
This time I would like to stay for 2 days. However, anyone is welcome to stay for 1 or 2 night/s. Whatever you desire is fine. My plan is to set up camp on Friday. Anyone interested can hike on Saturday. The hike information will be posted separately by Jeff or myself. On Sunday we can relax, enjoy nature while spending more time together talking, walking, swimming and breaking up camp slowly. Thanks to Heike we know of another swimhole (larger) right up the hill where we can also head to.
I hope you can attend.
I have a silver Mazda Protege. Please look for it in the Peekamoose Road Lower Field parking area. There are 5 parking areas close to each other on Route 42. We will be in the 5th and final lot with the blue outhouse. On my car I will leave a note with directions to which campground we are able to secure, in case you can't see us. There is no cell service in the area. We can head to the store down the road as needed.
If you would like to hang out with everyone the night of the campout, but not sleep in the tents, this is a welcomed option. Feel free to research/stay at a nearby hotel/motel. In the am you may still join us for a hike, of course. If you choose this option, please indicate in your comments section. This will allow me to know if a permit is needed or not.
From South: Take the exit onto I-87 N/NY-17 N toward Albany 14.9 miles
Continue to follow I-87 N, Toll road, Take exit 16 to merge onto NY-17 W toward US-6/Harriman 2.1 miles, Toll road, Continue onto US-6 W 12.2 miles, Continue onto NY-17 W 17.1 miles, Take exit 113 to merge onto US-209 N toward Wurtsboro/Ellenville 15.1 miles, Turn left at NY-55 W 5.3 miles, Turn right at B w S Rd/New York 55A W 7.6 miles, Turn right at Co Rd 153/Sundown Rd 2.7 miles, Continue onto Co Rd 42/Co Rd 46/County Line-Sundown Rd 3.9 miles (give or take), continue to follow Co Rd 42.
From Ellenville (Ulster County) vicinity: Just North of the village of Ellenville (Ulster County), find the intersection of US 209 and NYS 55. Take NYS 55 West towards the Rondout Reservoir. Next go right onto NYS 55A. After about 8-9 miles, turn right onto Sullivan County 153. Road becomes Ulster County 46 (no turn involved). Less than 1 mile after crossing the county line, turn left onto Ulster County 42 (Peekamoose Rd). Go about 2.5 miles - parking is on your left. There are four closely spaced parking areas here - look for Moni's car.
From Kingston (Ulster County) vicinity: On your map of Ulster County, find the Ashokan Reservoir, which is located northwest of the City of Kingston. NY28A runs along the southern edge of the reservoir. Take NY28A west to West Shokan (near western end of Ashokan Reservoir). (Note that NY28A is not a fast road). Turn left onto CR42 (Watson Hollow Rd). Finding the intersection of CR42 with NY28A can be a bit tricky. At the intersection, instead of CR42 making a simple T with NY28A marked with the usual green road sign, CR42 splits in two, so that the roads border a triangular, grassy island. Within this island there is a fancy brown wooden sign which lists a number of things. One of the things is the road name, which I believe is given as Watson Hollow Rd. Once on CR42, go very approximately 12 miles - parking is on your right. There are four closely spaced parking areas here - look for Moni's car. (If you reach an intersection with CR 46 in Sundown, you've gone a bit too far.)
I will be monitoring the weather prior to the event and if conditions do not look good, the event is subject to cancellation. Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving your house. The cancellation notice will be sent prior to 10 am if required.
