Announcing a new Meetup for Ulster County Outdoors!

What: Hike to Slide Mountain

When: December 5,[masked]:30 AM

Slide Mt Trail Head
Ulster County 47
Oliverea, NY 12410

Join us for a hike to Slide Mountain, the highest peak in the Catskills. Slide is capped with a balsam fir boreal forest and spectacular views! On a clear day you can see 70 Catskill peaks, the Shawangunks, the Hudson Highlands, the Taconics, the Berkshires, and maybe even the Green Mts in Vermont.

Total distance is 7 miles, vertical rise is 1700 ft. NY/NJ Trail Conference map # 43. Hike will be led at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind!

Hike is described in "Walks and Rambles in the Western Hudson Valley" by Peggy Turco. Hiking to the summit we'll use the yellow-blazed Phoenicia-East Branch Trail and then the red-blazed Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail. For the return, we'll retrace part of the WS trail, then turn left onto the blue-blazed Curtis-Ormsbee Trail, then right onto the Phoenicia-East Branch Trail. The different return route offers two additional view points, is less traveled, and is in better condition (a plus for our tired feet going downhill!). If we run short of time, we'll return the same way we went up, which reduces the total distance to 5.6 miles.

Directions to trail head: Take NY 28 (on north side of Ashokan Reservoir) west to Big Indian. Turn south on Ulster County 47 (Oliverea-Slide Mt Rd) and drive 9.5 miles to marked parking on your left. Note that you must pass Winnisook Lake to reach the correct parking. If you're at parking located on a hairpin turn, you haven't gone far enough.

What to bring: Plenty of water, lunch, snacks, wind protection for the top, a headlamp or flash light (this is for backup only, in case something unexpected slows us waaay down), and an adventurous spirit! If there has been significant snow in the Catskills before the hike, Micro-spikes or Stabilicers for your boots might come in handy if we encounter some ice.

Cancellation info: If the weather looks bad, I'll e-mail the people planning to attend the evening before the hike.
