New Meetup: Hike the Mossy Glen & Rainbow Falls Trails in Minnewaska State Park

Announcing a new Meetup for Ulster County Outdoors!

What: Hike the Mossy Glen & Rainbow Falls Trails in Minnewaska State Park

When: Saturday, April 17,[masked]:00 AM

Minnewaska State Park Preserve
5281 Rte 44 55
Kerhonkson, NY 12446

This hike has it all! First, the Mossy Glen Trail hugs the bank of picturesque Peters Kill Creek. Then a short piece of the Blueberry Run Trail climbs through some typical rocky, bushy, scrubby-pine Shawangunk terrain. After doing a piece of the Upper Awosting Carriageway, we'll take the Rainbow Falls Trail down into Huntington Ravine, where we find - no surprise - Rainbow Falls! After climbing back out of the ravine, we'll be rewarded with some decent views (not as spectacular as some in Minnewaska) as we hike along the ravine edge. The trail comes out onto the Lower Awosting Carriageway, which takes us, downhill all the way (Yay!), back to the parking lot. Somewhere along the way, we'll eat lunch.

Hike will be done at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind. The aim is enjoyment by everyone, not speed! Total distance is about 7 miles. There is an option to bail out at the end of the Mossy Glen Trail, shortening the hike to about 3.5 miles. A significant portion of the hike is on trails, not carriageways, and the Mossy Glen Trail has some soggy spots. So hiking boots are highly recommended.

What to bring: $7 per car park entry fee, plenty of water, lunch, bug repellent, sunscreen.

To find park: Take Rt 299 West out of New Paltz. When 299 ends, turn right on Rt 44/55 and go 4.7 miles. Take the 2nd park entrance on left, which will take you immediately into the lower parking area. (If for some reason this gate is closed, back track a very short distance and use the previous entrance on the same side of the road. After paying at the kiosk, you will then need to immediately turn right and go a short distance down a dirt road to reach the lower parking lot.

Cancellation info: if the weather forecast looks doubtful the night before, watch your email early the morning of the hike. If the hike is cancelled, I'll send email early.
