We'll first hike beside Kanape Brook, gradually climbing on an old woods road. Later, we leave the road and climb steeply upward on a trail. The steep climb is interrupted several times by relatively level terraces. At the summit one can see the Shawangunk ridge south to the Beacons, Schunemunk Mt, and the Hudson Highlands. A short hike to another knob offers fabulous views north & northwest of Peekamoose, Table, Lone, Rocky, Balsam Cap, Friday, Slide, Cornell, Wittenberg, & Terrace Mountains. The meadows surrounding this knob, at the right season (which unfortunately is not May), are blueberry heaven.
Round-trip distance is 7.5 miles, vertical rise is 1,980 feet. Hiking boots are highly recommended due to the climb on the trail to the summit. Hike will be done at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.
What to bring: plenty of water, lunch, wind protection for the top, sunscreen, insect repellent
Directions: NY28A to West Shokan (western end of Ashokan Reservoir). Take CR42 (Watson Hollow Rd), go 4.1 miles to marked parking on right.
