Principiante Lezione e Conversazione

This meetup will be directed by Enza.  If you have any suggestions for this study day please post in comments below.

Note: Tuesday classes are for beginning Italian students who need a refresher on grammar and vocabulary before moving up to the more advanced class.

For those of you who never had any exposure to Italian or to another foreign language, I recommend that you first take an introductory class, either at a community college or an adult education center prior to joining our group. This does not pertain to the people who are already in class and have started making progress. Also, look for events such as movies or restaurant outings that are open to all group members.

    Part 1 of
Tutti, Last week I talked about:”The use of the known to lead to the possibly/partially-unknown [via cognates]
I purposely talked rapidly and had no hard copies or visuals
because I did not want to take up too much of your time.
It occurs to me that I may have been too fast so I repeat some of what I had said [in the following]:

-reminder of spelling of Italian word for “Venice”[i.e.: VENEZia
by recalling that the country VENEZuela” was named “little Venice”[because of the manner in which
the natives were observed living in huts above the water.
Ergo, VENEZia [note 1st 5 letters is
    a cognate of VENEZuela

-reminder of spelling of Italian word for “railroad”[FERROvia
by recalling that the Italian word used is “iron; [not rail as in English”]- way
Ergo: You can recall the cognate for iron by remembering the adjective FERRous ,
or the chemical symbol for iron:”FE”
then add the Italian word “via” and
be reminded of the cognate FERROvia

-reminder of spelling of Italian word for “East”
by recalling that the English word for the geographical area at the East-end of the Mediterranian is
    :”The LEVANt”
Ergo, LEVArsi [the Italian word for “to lift myself up”[in Italian] can be remembered by the cognate:”LEVANt”
[the direction from which the sun rises [lifts itself up”] :i.e. the East. the LEVANt

-reminder of spelling of Italian word for traffic light at road intersections[SEMAFORo
by recalling that the English word for the signal system on railways is SEMAPHORe
Ergo: You can recall the cognate SEMAFORo by recalling SEMAPHORe

--reminder of spelling of Italian word for in-laws [“relatives” i.e.: COGNATa;COGNATo;COGNATi
by recalling that the English word COGNATe
Ergo: the English for “related”[i.e. COGNATe]
    is itself a COGNATe
    of :”COGNATa;COGNATo;COGNATi”

    last part:
Maybe I should have called the above:”MEMORy aides [cognates:”MEMORia in Italian; “MEMOire in French]

I had thought that some people might be aided in recalling some words via the use of cognates,
but it was only a suspicion because I don’t use any of the above. I have no need
because I have no need to go from the English word to the Italian because I remember the words directly
[ but because i LEARNED THEM AS A CHILD, it was effortless but I assume that learning as an adult is not as easy.

The day after I spoke, it dawned on me that I was out-of-line {I guess that the session theme “study on your own” [or words to that effect] that I interpreted to imply “Quiet self-study”}meant something other than what I had imagined. Maybe I would have understood what was meant by:’study on your own”, if I had attended more sessions. So I apologize for misunderstanding the session-intent and wasting some of your time. bruno
