Richard Kinssies will present sparkling wines from around the world; Just in time for your New Year?s celebration. Here are the wines we will be tasting:
*Non Vintage Szigeti Brut Sparkling Gruner Veltliner (Austria) $18 (market value $25)
This is a special wine. Szigeti is the producer and Gruner Veltliner is the grape. Gruner is the most important white grape in Austria and it can make amazing wines both still (without bubbles)... and sparkling. This one is bright and fresh and though it is very dry it is loaded with fruit. I brought a bottle with me when I was a guest on KUOW last week (Weekday with Steve Scher) and it was a real hit. I hear they continued drinking it during the next segment of the show.
*Non Vintage Henri Abele Brut Champagne (FR) $29 (market value to $50)
This is real Champagne and one of the best values in the category I have had in the stores.
Though it may not be the most famous Henri Abele is one of the oldest and most respected of the Champagne houses. The wine is dry with notes of yellow apple and biscuits.
*2007 Chateau Gaudrelle Brut Vouvray (FR) $16 (market value $21)
France?s Loire Valley produces almost as much sparkling wine as does the Champagne region. Some of the best from the Loire are made in Vouvray, which is famous for its wines made from the chenin blanc grape. Chenin is perfect for sparkling wines with its high acidity and intense aromas of pears and white peaches.
Chateau Gaudrelle has been one of the top Vouvray producers (both still and sparkling) for as long as I have been in the wine industry and I?m a big fan of this dry and complex ?07 sparkler.
*Non Vintage Domaine Michel Juillot Blanc de Blanc Cremant de Borgogne $19 (market value $25)
This is a sparkling wine from the Burgundy region of France. It is made almost entirely from chardonnay grapes and has the elegance and complexity that that grape imparts on sparkling wines. This wine could easily pass for Champagne.
I also have lots of Prosecco, dry sparkling roses, sparkling shiraz, high end Champagne and lots of interesting things in between; many of which will be tasted this Thursday at Greenlake Wines.
All of out Thursday Tastings occur during Happy Hour. We have $3 glass pours and $3 food items. There is never a corkage fee on bottles.
