Location Portraiture with guest instructors John and Susan Francis

Check out lots of examples of what we'll learn on our Facebook group:
Just request membership and we'll let you right in.  John and Susan have been posting lots of images and explaining more about what we will learn in this workshop!

We are continuing to recruit some of the top photography instructors to teach at Understand Photography!  John and Susan Francis of Harmon's School of Photography and Catchlight Studios Photography in Orlando are coming to Southwest Florida to teach one of their most popular workshops!

Friday 6-9 p.m.
Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
with a break for lunch on your own from 1-3 p.m.

Limited to 15 photographers

In this workshop, participants will learn to photograph people on location under many different circumstances and lighting conditions. This day and a half of instruction and practice will give participants knowledge and confidence to get the best people pictures in any location and any light.  You'll leave with beautiful portfolio images!!

Friday evening (6-9 pm) will be spent in the classroom reviewing the technical and compositional aspects of location portraiture. Topics covered will include: lens and aperture choice, views of the face, choice of camera height, how to meter and focus for location portraits, key elements of a location, eliminating distractions, creating depth through light and focus, creating contrasts through light, color and texture, and how to create interesting and complementary backgrounds.

We will discuss a variety of compositional aids, including framing, leading lines, repeating elements, parallel lines, shadows and reflections, and how these can be used to enhance your portraiture.

Finally, we will discuss lighting for location portraiture, how to recognize good light and deal with bad light. We will also discuss the use of big and small flashes on location, covering the pros and cons of each approach, and demonstrating how off-camera flash can be used to completely alter the ‘feel’ of the original scene.

On Saturday morning, at 9 am we will go on location with models where participants will put many of these techniques into practice under the supervision of John and Susan. We will learn to visualize, manipulate and create light in order to capture great images using both natural light and flash. We expect to be shooting until approximately 1 pm.

After lunch (around 3 pm) we will reconvene in the classroom where John and Susan will lead a constructive critique of students' images (2-5 from each participant) from earlier in the day.

After that, we will conclude with an in-depth discussion of some of the post-processing techniques designed to get the most out of your location portraits. Software used will include Lightroom, Photoshop and a variety of plug-in applications including Portraiture, Portrait Professional, OnOne Perfect Suite and the Nik Software Collection.

To benefit from this workshop, participants will need a digital single lens reflex camera, preferably with a lens (or lenses) in the range of[masked] mm. All lighting equipment will be provided. A laptop computer and card reader to allow for the download and selection of 2-5 images for critique would be helpful but not essential as we will also have these items for your use if necessary.

Friday:  Your camera, pencil and paper to take notes

Saturday:  Your camera with a full charged battery and standard hotshoe (most DSLRs have them)
Laptop to load your images in on Saturday.

Thank you John and Susan for a great workshop! Many great ideas were shared in the classroom and your instruction while shooting was just as wonderful. I'll never pass a wall with many colors, columns, textures, repeating patterns again without thinking of your class and how to use them! Thank you Peggy for inviting John and Susan to Naples!

John and Susan were the best instructors! Not only were they great teachers but they were so patient with all of us when it came to hands on training, which was much appreciated. It was fun and so informative. Thank you and hope to get to attend another workshop of yours again in the future. I may have to take a trip to Orlando :-) thanks again!

This was, beyond a doubt, the best of the many workshops that I have attended at Understand photography, not to take anything away from the other workshops. Peggy scored a big win bringing John and Susan in to run the show. The sessions at the start, Friday evening and at the end, Saturday afternoon, had so much information that it will take weeks to absurbe it all. Shooting on Sat morning, with three models was amazing and brought my portrait photography to a new level with some outside the box thinking. Thank you John and Susan. Well done Peggy, please continue to find more instructors and workshops of this caliber.

If I could give 10 stars to this I would absolutely do it. I learned so much, some of which I already kind of knew, but not things really clicked in. This is definitely a do over.. John and Susan are amazing. They were able to teach me things is such an easy care-free way. I was very much relaxed even though much of what was covered was very new to me and way over my head in the beginning. Loved it.
