UniForum Chicago: - Open Technology PKI

  • Nov 19, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Illinois Institute of Technology - Rice Campus

UniForum Chicago is proud to announce the topic for the November 19, 2013 General meeting: "CA - Open TechnologyPKI" by Ken Schumacher.

Our meetings are free and open to the public and begin promptly at 7pm at the IIT Rice Campus in Wheaton, IL.  Additional information regarding this presentation can be found at

Hope to see you there!

Ken Schumacher's goal in this presentation is to introduce concepts and technologies in the area of IT Identification Management (ITIM). We will look at PKI (Pubilc Key Infrastructure) as it is used in OpenPGP and digital certificates. He'll show you how these are used to enhance privacy, ensure authenticity, and verify the identity of those we communicate with.  Hell also explain how you can get your own free digital certificate through

Once we have finished, we will adjourn to nearby Cozymel's Mexican restaurant for food and drinks.

My knowledge was previously limited to man pages and program help. Being able to ask questions to a true expert was wonderful. His presentation was very thorough and *friendly*, and really filled in my knowledge blank spots.

It's one thing to have someone speak on something he is knowledgeable about. It's another when that person also has a passion for it which makes it all the more fascinating and interesting. UniForum Chicago was truly honored to have Ken Schumacher speak on CACERT.ORG, public key certificates and related technology. He would be most certainly welcome to present again sometime in the future if he was so inclined.

A good audience. They asked good (sometimes good and challenging) questions. I enjoyed speaking for this meeting. I would speak there again if there is another topic I could address for them.

This was an outstanding meeting. Plus the actual process surrounding PKI is a rarely covered topic.

The kind of topic for which I joined Uniforum Chicago. Presentation was clean and unobtrusive. Introductory material was helpful.

Unfortunately I'll be at a client engagement all next week.

Wish I could be there, but I will be away in Colorado that week attending a conference. If anyone has plans to video tape this, it will certainly be appreciated (and I suspect by others who also could not make it).
