Old Town Pasadena to Downtown (10.0 mi)

This hike will begin in Old Town Pasadena at the Memorial Park Gold Line station.  We will go down Colorado to Figueroa, through parts of Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights and Chinatown.  We will explore Olvera Street and Chinatown at the end, then hop on the Gold Line and go back up to Memorial Park.

Here's the official route in google maps.

If this is your first hike with us, read about how our hikes work.

Hi, Guys! I noticed that the Lummis Home has a sustainable garden party on Saturday. It's on our route, and I think it would be fun to stop off there. Any thoughts?

Is it possible for people to join you at different parts along the route if we can't get to Pasadena by 9am, or is that not really a possibility?

    Thanks! : )

I think this should go, rain or not--but I'd love it if it got rescheduled! I woke up this morning feeling a little achy & chill-ish; probably not wise to take a 10-mile hike in the rain! Even if the hike DOES go--I'd love an opportunity to take another whack at this! :-)

I agree with Scott. I really want to do this walk, but not in the rain. They are calling it 80% chance ....reschedule?

After reading comments, questions still prevail: Is this a one-way 10-mile hike, or 10 miles RT? If one-way, what's the transportation plan? Thanks David and Scott for posting Metro/parking info. As on the other hike, if a group wants to stop and stare, they can, while the other part of the group continues, right? I'm interested in hearing Route 66 banter, and any other banter that informs my psyche.

Hey Dev - if you map it, it's 10 miles to from Pasadena to LA. As Beth said, you can take the gold line back to pasadena after. You could also leave your car in Dowtown and take the gold line to meet everyone in Pasadena - then when you reach the end of the hike, you can just hop in your car and head home.

@Dev: it is a one-way 10-mile walk, starting in Pasadena and ending in downtown L.A. If you park your car in Pasadena, you can jump on the Gold Line after the walk is done and return to your car. If you park your car in L.A., you'd have to take the Gold Line to Pasadena prior to the walk, then do the walk, and when the group reaches downtown L.A. your car will be there.

    RE: PARKING in Pasadena...
there are approximately 125 free parking spaces for Gold Line riders in the parking structure at the Fillmore Station, and the Del Mar Station offers very cheap parking ($2 per day) for Gold Line patrons...enter the parking structure from Raymond St. Just make sure you keep your ticket to show to the parking attendant upon exiting.

There's a "Park & Walk" garage right across the street from Memorial Park Station: Marriott Parking Facility, 171 N. Raymond Avenue (between Holly and Walnut). All-day parking cost is $6. Also, here's a link to more Old Town Pasadena parking info: http://www.oldpasadena.org/map.asp

Yikes! The last time I looked it was just over 100. Are this many people at a time allowed to walk down the sidewalk--without a permit, for example? Are there safety issues that law-enforcement might be concerned about? You can't get that many people across an intersection on one green light! Matt or Becky, have you ever done an urban hike this large? (On the other hand, I've been on events where only HALF the RSVPs actually show-up...)

I was at the "Secret Stairs and Hidden Pathways Hike" last week with over 200 people and it went great, It was lots of fun walking with so many people across Silver Lake and Echo Park

People tend to flake as well. There were 300 RSVPs for the walk last week and there were definitely not 300 people there. Plus, everyone moves at different speeds - some like to go slower and sidetrack more while others like to push straight through.

Sorina, we will be walking past a few of the goldline stations on our walk. If you take a map of the stations with you, you can always leave early to make your appointment. The goldline will be running every 12-15 minutes tomorrow.

Nice job, everybody! Although I learned I really have to choose just ONE on outings like this: "walk", "shoot pictures", or "pick up litter"... If you try and do all three, you end up waaaaaay behind everyone else!

And to the nice woman I was talking to about the guy who's walking every street of every borough NY, here's his website: http://imjustwalkin.com/
