Where: Pete and Jen's Backyard Birds

Yup, you read it right. We're going to head out to Pete and Jen's Backyard Birds in Concord for this empowering learning experience and ultimate sustainable activity. Pete Lowy and Jen Hashley own a small-scale commercial pastured-organic poultry business on the property of Verrill Farm, in Concord. Every few months, they utilize a Mobile Poultry Processing Unit (an outdoor stainless steel slaughtering kitchen) to process all their meat birds by hand. October 30th is going to be the last processing date of the summer season. Pete and Jen make this slaughtering process completely transparent to the community and to their consumers, by opening it up for volunteers. They ask that you commit 4-5 hours of volunteer slaughter time, but recommend a full day -or 8 hours. Spectators are not allowed. Everyone in attendance will be asked to participate in the slaughtering process. I'll be heading out there roughly 8 or 9 in the morning (whenever it starts)...For more details, to see photos of the Mobile Poultry Process, or to sign up officially - go to Pete and Jen's website: www.peteandjensbackyardbirds.com. You have to let them know you're coming, so they can keep track of the labor they'll have on hand. I'll be driving from Waltham, so let me know if you need a ride, or a pick up from a suburban commuter rail station. Pete and Jen's is located on Wheeler Road in Concord. Feel free to email me - [address removed], or Jen at [address removed] - for more information.
