2013 Masterworks Concert

The American Four Seasons

We pay tribute to Asheville’s own Robert Moog in a program that contrasts masterpieces of the Baroque with modern American classics.  The concert begins with the regal Water Music of Handel.  Though composed for King George’s cruise down the Thames, this music may be better suited to the dry land of the Thomas Wolfe stage where violins run merrily, trumpets blare joyously, and kettle drums thunder with magisterial confidence.  Young American violinist Tim Fain joins us to perform Philip Glass’ 2nd Violin Concerto, nicknamed ‘The American Four Seasons.’  Designed to be played by the same orchestra as Vivaldi’s famous Four Seasons, Glass swaps the harpsichord for a synthesizer, and the music drives with the rhythms and repetitions of modern urban life.  Aaron Copland’s Three Latin American Sketches reveals the great American composer’s love for the infectious syncopations and jumping melodies found south of our border.  We round-out the evening with a twist – a ‘switched-on’ performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in which traditional instruments mix with modern musical technologies pioneered by Moog himself.

I have purchased tickets.  You show your committment to attend by paying me $10.  The club will furnish the balance of the ticket price.  Last time we attended, they seated us in the wrong section.  Just a warning, in case they are sold out and do the same things again.  Your seats are in Orchestra Section S Right, Seats 6-9.  That is of course on ground floor, directly in front of the stage.  If you have not attended a Symphony event in the past, you can find a map on the Civic Center website and find where you will be sitting.  Hoping you would choose to sit together, I asked for a seating of four.  The Symphony begins at 8pm.

Members only, until all Members have an opportunity to respond.

Urban Legends is not created in order to make a profit, but a community. I am using membership funds to buy tickets to offer to members. I hope you enjoy the performance!
