Avast me hearties! Pardon the pirate talk but have you ever fancied taking to the high seas on a sailboat....well not necessarily the high seas or have a fascination or curiosity about sailboats? Well here's your chance to be "crew for a day" on a sailboat?

Ms. Nora Feddal a long time member of UA, and who happens to be the current vice commodore of the South Bay Yacht Racing Club, a non-profit organization based in Marina del Rey, will be conducting their annual sailboat start clinic and was gracious enough to extend an invitation to our group to participate in the clinic for novice to intermediate sailors who are interested or just curious about sailboats.

They are currently lining up mentors and sail boats to be used that day. Practice will be on different type of boats, from sport boats like the Open 5.70 to 40 foot sail boats.

This is a whole day event. Well, most of the day anyway so please plan accordingly and do not rsvp yes unless you have the time available.

The plan is to meet at Santa Monica Windjammer Yacht Club (SMWYC) in Marina el Rey around 9:00 am til noon for a chalk talk reviewing the rules and learn about the strategies to be used. Participants will then be assigned to a boat and a mentor (who are all top racers from the marina and have a lot of experience) for a practice on the water in the afternoon .

They will be video recording the practice and will use it for de-briefing when participants come back to the yacht club. The practice is on how to start and position yourself on the starting line and beat the competition. We will practice several starts and probably have one short race.

This event will include a free breakfast, the morning seminar and use of the boat in the afternoon for practice. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch as this will take up a good part of the day. Please check in for any updates and changes every now and then. Otherwise, most updates and changes will be sent via subsequent email.

We are starting with 12 spots with a wait list option and will increase the number of spots if additional boats become available.

Now for the fun part..... ;)

It was great to have you there and really glad that you had fun. I posted some pictures; one with the spin at the finish, And also the picture of the whale we saw just before the breakwater.

    •  Wow what an incredible day of racing sailboats! There were close calls and near misses. At some point collisions seemed inevitable. Most of all, it was a lot of fun spending time with both new and familiar faces! But the "mostest" and "funnest" was UA members manning two huge sailboats and taking No. 1 and 2 place in the actual race of a fleet of at least 10-12 boats! We kick major arse and took no prisoners!!! Many many thanks to Nora for making all this possible!
    •  First Place! We tacked, we jibbed and when that spinnaker went up, we knew it was smooth sailing to the finish line. What a great day - new adventure and new friends.
    •  Oh man! Flippin' awseome day at sea! From learning how to 'trim my jib' to taking 2nd in the yacht race (David, Kelly, & Matt took first! Cheaters!), it was a blast. Thanks so much to Henry for setting this up and Nora for inviting us down! Jenn, I won't hold it against you for pulling on my man's rope! =D Whoohooo! Can't wait to do it again!
    •  JIBE HO! Thanks Nora and Henry for setting this up! Although it was quite a bit technical for the uber-novice, I had a great time on the boat! I only wish I could have been more help to the skipper but I still don't know the purpose of a jib and I can't even remember the difference between tacking and jibing. Big ups to all us UAers who were on the 1st and 2nd place boats in the race! Well done!
