Ghost signs are advertisements of a bygone era, painted on the sides of buildings, long faded and forgotten. There is also beautiful old architecture and fancy facades on many of the buildings.

We will be walking around downtown LA, daytime, looking out for faded signs on the sides of historic business neighborhoods, also on the lookout for the beautiful facades of the buildings.

There are a couple of dive bars and ethnic restaurants we will also stop into along the way.

No special equipment necessary, bring whatever format camera you have, it'll work just fine.

I want to keep the group between 12-15 (OK, I'll move it up to 25), we're going to be looking enough like tourists as it is. White loafers or brown sandals, dark socks, bermuda shorts, fishing hats optional (or perhaps, required).

We'll end up at the Redwood, for some cold brews and some great music in the afternoon, hopefully we won't be chased there by the helicopters this time.

    •  Really good event!
    •  people are nice and howard was educational.
    •  What a fun day! The group was great - lots of photographers and interesting conversations. Howard is a gem. Very knowledgeable about downtown history and architecture. He was also the perfect glue to hold the group together without being overbearing in any way. Always relaxed, friendly and easygoing...and I finally got to visit the Redwood Bar. It's been on my list for months!
    •  Had a great time despite my lens breaking and getting stuck in my camera 20 mins into the meet up. Lunch at Coles was fantastic, and what better way to quench your thirst and rehydrate yourself than with a big gulp sized serving of ice cold horchata from Grand Central Market?
    •  Despite the heat, Howard did a FANTASTIC job of showing us all the magnificent structures still standing in downtown. Who knew that there was so much history there! Great job Howard! You were very organized and very thorough..oh and loved your note cards:)
    •  That was a lot of fun. I wasn't expecting the history lessons on the buildings which was cool. Thanks guys for putting this one together!
    •  Howard, thanks for putting together this great historical tour of downtown. I had no idea there was that much history to be found downtown.
    •  Thanks for braving the heat for a nice walk around downtown. I always discover something new (old) whenever I'm down there. I already have great leads for the next wave of this tour.
    •  Howard did a GREAT job of organizing all that we were going to see, with very clear directions and a map. I wound up losing the group, because I tend to linger with a photo, but I still was able to follow the route, see lots of ghosts and other things, and had a good day.
